Yep. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

Honestly, it's probably for the best. Once you start to take more aggressive efforts to remove the bar, the odds that you've gouged the surface are pretty high. Once that happens, the bar is vastly more likely to snap as the outer portion of the bar bears the brunt of the twisting forces.

For as stunningly simple and elegant of a design as the torsion bar suspension is, it seems to cause plenty of headaches for shadetree mechanics lying on their backs on the ground trying to get everything lined up, etc.
 
PB Blaster it overnight , remove clip, wrap a shirt around the bar place two vice grips and hit towards the rear. Using a good hammer.
