What's your favorite procedure for removing the engine and 4 spd from the car? AND can you detail HOW you do it? Looking for an education. - All my other mopars were automatics!

1) Engine/trans/K-frame out the bottom?
2) Engine/trans as a unit up through the top?
3) Trans out from the bottom, engine out the top?

thanks

I removed the engine out the top, tranny out the bottom. Then putt everything in from the bottom.

By taking the motor out the top I was able to keep it as a roller for paint.

cool! like the rig!

where did you disconnect the motor from at the trans? Clutch come up with the motor? Bellhousing stay with the trans?

Does the shift come down with the trans as one piece? told you I'm new with manual transmissions! lol

How much do you actually removed before dropping the trans? z-bar? please detail....

THANKS!

My car is a auto, so.............

Factory service manual, or something comparable will help immensely.

With a 4 spd, remove the shifter . Get an engine tilter. They're cheap but make a huge difference.

remove shifter and linkage, jack rear of car up and pull motor and trans out the top - if you use a carb lift plate you don't even need to remove the hood.

don't know about the clutch linkage - mine's hydraulic

I have the car on a lift, so I'd like to drop the K frame/engine / trans out the bottom. I just have to figure out how to remove the clutch linkage and all the other stuff, before doing it. should be fun!
thanks for the replys

I saw version #1 done in a Mopar mag a few years ago and they swore by that method. They said it was the way the unit was installed at the factory, so it made sense to me. I will be doing the same when I change from a 318 to a 440 in my '68 'Cuda because I will be putting discs on and changing to a four-speed anyway. Because I will also be changing the rear, I plan to build some brackets with big caster wheels to roll the car around inside the garage.

2

I tried 3 and I didn't have any success at it!
I got on here and asked "What heck am I doing wrong!" Everyone told me the #2 method and everything went smooth as glass.

I would do # 2

But to answer your question...undo the clutch adjuster nut on the clutch lincage that is between the z bar and the clutch fork.

Once you haveit loose enough you can un clip itfrm the Z bar andremoveit from the clutch fork. Then you will have to undo the Z bar ball studat the bell housingin orderto remove the z bar. once you have that removed you can then undo the u joints, and the tranny cross member, then the motor mounts, and the wiring, and then take it out thetop. You should take the rad out too.

I wouldn't take it out from the bottom. I think it would be more work.

You can either und the tranny from the Bell housing, or the bell housing from the engine. Either way would work if you are going to take the tranny out the bottom. butthefist one is easier I think.

Why do youwant to take it out the bottom? are you going to bendercoating the car? or doing a frame off resto? of not...take it out the top....way easier. remember to have the body secured to the hoist well. I had a buddie have his dart almost come off the back once he undid the last bolt on the K member. Oneperson can lift the front of a car without the engine/tranny/Kmember on it. really ligt.

I've installed/removed at least 10 combos (K frame/eng/trans/) through the bottom, all with automatics. No manuals. Car on a lift, and a rolling stand for the eng/trans assy, make s it cake. thanks for the tips mrtires....

i haveremoved one K member befor, and I have done a disc brake conversion on one car too. The biggest pain I have with the K member removal way is seperating the Ball studs/joints, and removeing the T bars. Do you have any tips on how to make it easier? also include pics of specialty tools. I have a ball studseperating tool, and it is still abig pain. I also find that the upper control arm bolts are sometimes siezed in. Gotta love the BC wet climate, and the salted rds!!! I bought a car from washington, and everything was easy.
