This forum has been incredibly helpful so far so I might as well try again. I have a 1972 Dodge Dart Swinger with a newly installed Slant 6 and 727 from a 68 Cuda. Everything is pretty much hooked up. My issue is when I went to go start it today I got nothing. Turns out the transmission is stuck in reverse and my gear selector is smooth with no discernable click when you'd select the gears. The linkage is hooked up to the tranny and I just put in transmission fluid. Where should I start?

Probably need to check and make sure the linkage is connected throughout. Maybe have some one shift it for you while you watch and be sure it's moving down at the trans. If not just follow the linkage back up while they're shifting to find the problem.

That's what I thought as well. After a bit of checking my work there. I found that the transmission control lever moves freely. Is there anything that I can do?

Is it possible the linkage is hooked up wrong at the pivot point on the trans bell housing?
That could do it.
This is a column shift or floor?

If your lever on the trans moves and clicks into each position without the linkage being connected the it has to be the linkage itself doesn't it?

I wish. I disconnected the linkage to check the control lever and it's the lever that is moving freely with little to no force required to move it. Or maybe I'm just a doof mean and it's supposed to do that. Once again transmissions are not my thing. It is a column shifter.

Sounds like it's inside the trans, but here's the thing.
There is a valve that moves in and out of the side of the valve body that controls fluid flows, and there is the part that moves that valve.
The part that moves the valve has the detents (the clicks when the linkage lever on the trans moves)
If that lever does not have any resistance to moving from position to position there is something missing.
The part that does that click click when you move the lever on the trans is called a rooster comb (because of what it looks like) and there is a ball and spring to keep it in position when in any given gear on the shift linkage.

On your trans there should be two levers (one above the other)
The top smaller one is whats called the throttle pressure linkage, and that part connects to your carb linkage and should move toward the back of the car as the throttle is opened.
The bigger lower lever under that is your shift lever.
I mention this just in case you might have them mixed up and connected the shifter linkage to the throttle pressure lever instead.

Lets see if this picture helps any, and maybe you can try to describe better what is happening.

The retaining E-clip is AWOL,the roostercomb has popped up ,the detent ball flew the coop, and the manual valve is no longer connected to the hip bone. The VB needs to come down, the detent ball reinstalled, the comb reindexed to the manual valve, and finally the comb locked down with the proper sized E-clip. Then back together it goes.
You put your left foot in, then you shake it all around, that's what it's all about!

You guys have been incredible. Thanks for the detailed explanation guys. The photo definitely helped me understand what my problem is but it looks like it's a out of my league so it's going to a buddy of mine that works on tranny's but at least I know everything I need to get the repair done right. Thanks again!
