It's pretty easy to find the "$714 option cost" for the Hemi but searching around, I can't seem to find how much it would have costs to opt for the 440 Super Commando.

Does anyone know?

Uh................that's because you could not GET a 440 in a 68 RR

The only 440 available in them (at least up through 70, I don't remember later) was the six bbl in "69 1/2"

EDIT should have said "starting in 69 1/2"

Is that right?
THAT would be a good reason to not have a price. :)

So I swear that I have been looking at 440 '68 and '69 Roaddunners all my life... some local sources claim that many of these were probably swaps, but a lot of them could have been "special order." Does that sound right?

There is no such thing as a special order 440 4 barrel 68-70 RR. Like what was mentioned 440+6 wasn't available until 69 1/2 and that's it as far as the 440 in a RR goes unless you look at the super bird and that's another story altogether. Only when they combined the RR and GTX after 71 could you get a 440 super commando. If you see or hear of any they are not matching numbers because they don't exist!!!:bs::violent1:

In 1970 you could order the 440 or the Hemi in a Road Runner - base engine was still the 383. In 69 the 440 was only available in the Six Pack Road Runner. Base engine the 383, optional was the Hemi. The 440 was the base engine in the GTX starting in 1967.

Yep . 440-4 was an option in a GTX or Satellite Sport . In 1970 , if you wanted a 440-4 in that bodystyle , you got a Superbird .

Wellp...learn something every day. Thanks to all for the info!

There sure are a lot of swaps out there! I'm going to start snapping pics of fender tags.

Good thing the OP didn't ask about the 383 six pack.

Unless someone can prove differently, my research indicates-

The 440+6 was available mid year 1969, and again for 1970 and 1971.
Starting in 1972, a 440+4 was available, but if ordered, the RR became a GTX.
This continued for 1973 and 74.

Except for the Superbird (which WAS available with a 440+4, 440+6, or Hemi, but NOT a 383), those are the only optional 440 engines for the Road Runner I am aware of.

Now someone swapping a 440 INTO a RR was and is VERY COMMON, and if it is then sold, a lot of times the new owner thinks it's factory and doesn't know any better, or how to tell.

I knew this but never connected it in my mind that technically the 440 sport Satellite was really the poor mans muscle car in 68 not the roadrunner. So how many 440 4 speed satellites did they make in 68?

Zero,

Unless you go to Mopar Carlisle where one guy was trying to sell a
very rare {he had the only one} 1968 Road Runner 440 'Super Commando'
with a 'straight face'.

The 'Build Sheet' was eaten by his Dog, or so he said.

Yup, "pretty much."

By the way I owned the only 70 RR that had a 340 in. 'Course I PUT it there somewhere around 1973

In 1968, the '440/375 HP' 'Super Commando' was only available in the;

Plymouth GTX
Dodge Coronet R/T
Dodge Charger R/T

The Plymouth GTX is sometimes listed as a Sport Satellite 'GTX' or Satellite 'GTX',
but it really is it's own car.

The 4-Speed 'Manual-Transmission' cars came through with a Dana-Rear and 3.54 Gears.

The A-727 Automatic-Transmission' cars came through with the 8 3/4" rear and 3.23 Sure-Grip.

The 3.55 Gear-Set was the only Dealer Offered Option for the 8 3/4".

Though, if you knew a Regional Zone Manager, you could 'special order' a set of 3.91's for the 8 3/4" Rear
for $94.

No Special Orders for the Dana.

You could get a 440 4bbl in a 1970 Roadrunner.Atleast someone did there was 1 built....

I think the 440'sport satellites would have been much more expensive than a 383 RR, and probably close to the cost of a bare hemi RR, the sport satellites would have been a high option ride.

don't know about factory or not but the first car show I attended this year a red 69 RR backed in next to me and it had a super commando 440 4 bbl. 4 speed in her. the girl made the statement to me during the show that she was still paying on it. I am assuming by the conversation that she paid big bucks for it at a dealership or something. Which doesn't mean squat as to whether or not it came from the factory like that.

As pointed out, it Iooks like by 68 you could no longer get a 440 or 426 in a Satellite w/o adding the GTX "package" or trim or whatever. Earlier like in 66 you could get a satellite however you wanted w/o expensive extra packages.

The first column is GTX, notice teh N/A in every other column for a 440 from the dealer data book

That should be in order across the Top.

GTX - Belvedere - Satellite - Road Runner - Sport Satellite
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fact, no 1968 Satellite or Sport Satellite came through with a '440 Super Commando'.

In the 1968 Plymouth Model, it was GTX 'only' for the 440.

The GTX was built on the Belvedere 'frame' with the Sport Satellite upgrades.

For the 'technical' numbers guys in 1968
-------------------------------------------------------------
* 383 4-Barrel was an additional..................... $137 cost in a B-Body
* 440 'Super Commando' was an additional.......$377 in a B-Body
* 426 'Street Hemi' was an additional...............$605 in a B-Body.

i have never heard of or seen a sport satellite with a 440......a lot of sport satellites had 318 s ....so i think a 383 made them very high option cars....

i have a very optioned out one with a 383 RP23N0E which was a welcomed upgrade from a 318 one

My uncle had a 1969 Sport Satellite 440 4-speed car, red with white interior and pin striping.....sold it many years ago before those cars had any value. He missed it so much that he bought a nice unrestored 69 Sport Satellite from Washington state and drove it home, but that one has a 318.
