I've noticed that a lot of guys paint the engine compartment of their cars a flat black which I think looks terrible. They come from the factory painted body color, why ruin the looks of the engine compartment by painting it black.

That is a good question. It is not for me, but then again, some people have other ideas.
1. Maybe they think it looks nice. They like it.
2. Maybe the engine bay has some serious problems and that was the easiest patch available.
3. Maybe they don't think the orange or turquoise engine clashes with the body color.
4. Maybe they are on a tight budget, and they had to cut a corner.

I've done it for financial reasons.....

Many come from the GM side and everything is painted black and must think it is supposed to be black on Mopars. One can easily do a Craigslist rebuild for under $20.00 with a couple of rattle cans.

Id say its painted black because the engine was out and rebuilt and being body wasn't finished and the engine bay was faded and nasty looking, a semi gloss or even gloss rattle can job was a reasonable alternative......Doesn't bother me in a bit to see black engine compartment on a Mopar, having fun and enjoy driving his or her car is what counts

I kick myself every time I open the hood. The gloss black looks good but it isn't right. I pulled my engine in the late fall and rebuilt it during the winter. I was all excited and in a hurry to get it put back in and running, It had taken the wife's car spot in the garage over the winter. It was time. I couldn't put that new shiny engine in that fusty crusty engine compartment. Hey, I'll scuff it up, prime it and paint it gloss black. Someday I will paint the car and change it anyway. Well not yet so far. Hey, may be I'll paint the car black someday.

One of my cars is painted black in the engine compartment and I'm leaving it that way.
If some time in the future that I need to take the engine out, then maybe I'll paint it back to body color.
The car needs more pressing work at this time, so it's definitely on the back of the list for now.
Other than that, If it didn't come that way, I definitely like the factory body colored engine compartments better...

The engine has to be out in order to paint the engine compartment so why not paint it the body color? Even with the engine in place it doesn't cost anymore to paint it the same color

1.I like it.
2. It's my car.
3. I can.
4. I hate purists and get my jollies making them whine.
5. Its a mass produced appliance not the mona lisa.
6. I also have used ford and chevy parts to make my car better.
7. I build cars to enjoy driving.
8 . It is a service for the grey hairs that like criticizing others cars to make themselves feel better about having to pop a fistful of Viagra just to give the old bag 8 seconds of fun.

A lot of guys paint the underside of their cars the same color as the body too, which is not the way the factory did it. But it is easy to just spray everything one color and be done with it.
It is a lot of work restoring everything to the factory finish

Many people change colors of the body, as a running driving car. Prepping and painting around an engine is not bitchin it's a *****, black goes great with anything so that's why there's some black engine compartments.
My new thing if someone criticizes my stuff will be to ask for their checkbook

I like the way you said that. I wasn't trying to run down anybody's car, was just curious as to why they do that. I have seen one guy that disassembled his car when he painted it and still painted the engine compartment flat black.

I would always paint it body color because that is the way the factory did it and I like that. Also, restored cars will be easier to sell if it is painted that way. If you don't care about any of those things then I would paint it whatever color you want.

This guy is worried about black underhood. I once bought a black duster with pink under the hood. That was a legitimate gripe!

I'm not worried about black underhoods what so ever, was merely asking about why some people do this. In all honesty if you're going to paint a car correctly it needs to be disassembled and then you have no reason not to paint the engine compartment body color as the factory did

Show us pics of the engine compartment in your Abody.....
