"I was hard on the brake pedal and she would not slow down" , said the crasher. stock street cars have brakes that are more powerful than the engine. uninteded acceleration is an idiot stepping on the wrong pedal. if it happens, throw it in neutral and turn off the ignition. I floored the 360 Dart one day and the old throttle pressure linkage held the throttle wide open at about 75 mph on a 35 mph road, I got on the brakes hard and shut off the ignition. common sense. was talking about this the other day and a younger guy says how is that common sense, and he says he was in the navy for 4 years

It can happen if the driver side engine mount fails.

I install a solid mount on the driver side of all my cars now, once was enough.

Happened to me in my 64 sport fury. At a stop sign, stopped, gave it a little gas to creep up a little, the throttle return spring let loose, floored it! Shot across the traffic lanes no way brakes would hold the 426! Shut it off and it dieseled for like 20 Seconds, had to close the throttle plates by hand under the hood to get it to stop. SHIT my pants!!!

Happened to my buddy in his 70 cuda. Girlfriend thought it would be funny to turn off the motor on the freeway. Did not end well.

Modified or broke trans linkage? The column won't lock otherwise. One of the "first" things I did on my 70RR was unhook the annoying reverse lock linkage, so that one would lock "at speed."

Had the same thing happen to me in my 70 Duster 340. It was mid winter and it was so cold the throttle stuck half way down so I kicked it and it went to the floor. It went into 1st (727) away we went. Shut the key off immediately then jammed into neutral. Luckily the roads were dry and not snow covered. Scary moment for sure.

This is both mechanically possible and if on newer cars electrically. My daughter has a Toyota Yaris that has a wiring harness that causes this. I can't believe there's not a class action suit for the way they handled that recall.

When I replaced the ignition switch in my '70 dart I left the steering lock out!

The 340 I have for my Dart came out of a Challenger with a stuck throttle. The house and the car sustained major damage. They fixed the house.

Never had the throttle stick open, but I have had a car that was newer with cruise control in a 5-speed that I clutched and put a neutral while cruising at 70 mph...it just nailed 7500 till I hit the key instinctively to shut it off....then power steering performance was affected .

I had both of my throttle return springs removed by person or persons unknown while I was at a car show. Started the car, gave it a little gas and pedal didn't return. Sure am glad I was in park

While growing up a buddy of mine had a Pontiac Tempest with a 6 pack. Glad I wasn't with him when this happened, he stuck all 6 barrels WFO, lost it around a corner and took out a whole row of mail boxes. He traded that car immediately after that for two very old El Caminos. One day he invited me to go junk yarding for parts for the El Caminos and we saw two very interesting things at Greenhill Auto Wrecking that day.....his Pontiac Tempest that had met a utility pole and lost and the stunt car from the parade scene for the filming of Animal House, still had the turret on the top of the car, wish I would have bought it for the nostalgia.

In the early 80s was in my friends 1967 Impala Fastback LOL 327 and we're waiting at a stop sign to take a left onto a major street so he cranks the wheel to the left and punches it! Well the throttle stuck and of course he stabbed the brakes which made the car go straight across the street and smashed into the telephone pole dead center! Luckily we had not got up too much speed, but enough for me to smash my head on the dashboard. This could explain things....
Steering wheel lock takin out long time ago and a switch on the dash that shuts the whole show down completely.
