I want to improve my brakes, but I'm limited in skills, $$$, and would like to keep my 5 x4 bolt pattern. To replace my 9" drums w/ 10" drums on my '72 Valiant do the upper control arms and/or ball joints need to be replaced? For that matter, the lower ones too. I've asked a couple people and have gotten different answers.

There are differences in the spindle to lower ball joint bolt locations but I cant recall where.
Easiest way to be certain.. Go to a parts look up and get a part number for 6 cyl. build 9 inch drum lower ball joint. Then get a part number for V8 10 inch drum lower ball joint.

Keep in mind that changing from 9 inch to 10 inch dum brakes isn't going to make a huge difference.

this swap made my 62 valiant stop much better than, the 9" brakes-- An early 70's duster (i sold) with power 9" brakes stopped better than the 62 valiant --in either form of brakes.

just my $.02
