I'm thinking about buuing an old Black and decker valve grinder. Can anyone tell me if parts are still available for these things? Is there a better more affordable solution these days? This looks like the one I used in high school auto shop in the 90's and it was old then so I'm a little unsure about spending a couple hundred bucks on a paperweight.

Find out the driver model number, call goodson or a machine shop supply and ask if you can still buy holders or rebuild kits for the holders in the kit. Stones are still available. The pilot size is important for they changed over the years and it's relevant to the stone holder ..

I'm sorry. I should have noted this is the machine for valves only. It doesn't have the driver motor or anything for seats. I would have to find that elsewhere unfortunately.

Ah.. well as long as the chuck, bearings are tight. You just want to be able to trim the stems cut the faces.

This is what I think I may go grab tomorrow

I’ve got one of those also. Still works great and stones are available.

I had one for a while. I wish I coulda gotten it going. The easy part was finding mounts for the motor that had the studs sticking out both ends for the motor that spins the stones. and finding another motor to replace that one (if it were to be needed) would not have been hard, though that one on my unit was still OK.
The problem was what B&D called the "work head" the motor that spun the valve itself. I took it into am electric motor repair place because 1) it needed a new cord
and 2) it started letting out the magic smoke the 2nd or 3rd time I tried to run it. Once I had it unbolted from the base, I saw it was literally packed with grindings/filings.
According the electric motor shop, the armature needed rewound. I don't know if they do this with all that come in for repair or if the armature on this thing was "special" but they claimed the only place that could rewind it was somewhere in Wisconsin, and to send it out would have been over $400. so it went over the scale. (to the scrap yard)
I do have all the guide machining stuff still, hoping to find another valve grinder to pair it with.....someday
