I have been very ill since I last year after I decided to change cams. I haven’t been able to work on the 340 since last October. Long story short, when I removed the valve covers I looked at the valve springs and I noticed they had a little bit of red spots on them so I assumed they were stock or 901 springs. I felt good today and I decided to remove the #1exhaust spring and now I’m BAFFLED.
The spring looks too be a double spring and the head looks like it was machined for it and it has approx amount of .02-.03 thousands shims under the springs.
Also The valve stems are a single grove.
Any idea what double springs have red dabs of paint on them?

Don’t know if you’ll be able to identify the manufacturer but if you bring one or two springs to an automotive machine shop they should be able to tell you the spring rates.

Another option is to buy a spring tester. They're pretty affordable these days. I just used one from Proform to set up a set of heads. It was amazing to me how much the pressures varied from spring to spring. Then again, they were used. They all required different amounts of shims to make the seat pressures uniform at the installed heights each valve had.

That looks Orange, not Red to Me, and the DC/MP P3614542 is a dual w/damper Orange Stripe, the specs are;
100# on the seat @1.6875" Installed height
299# @1.1875" or .500" valve lift
Spring rate is 413#/inch
Spring goes solid @1.020"
Max recommended valve lift .610"

Hope you are feeling better. I see lash caps also, sounds like a serious engine. Not sure what brand of spring, but Crower provides wire diam, free length etc, you could check them out.

Jim, I went online and found the specs on diameters and dimensions and you were spot on correct with your observation, damn good eyes. Thanks

I wouldn't run those Springs with even .500 lift., let alone .600.lol
They always recommended way too light of spring pressure for their cams

Lol, they claimed the DC/MP grinds were smoother....thus revving higher & requiring less spring, We were running the blue stripe double "068"'s on the 292°/.508" six barrel engine....I'd say they were just enough.
