just purchased 5 inch vise from Harbor freight, cheap vise better than no vise. Question is I usually mount vise on stand to a large truck brake drum, since I do not have said drum, will a 15 inch rim work as well? Not sure if rim has enough base weight to hold vise upright. Normally used for welding 1 in square tubing, fencing, nothing over 50 lbs. It is nice to have it moveable and not take up bench space.

Weld a piece of good sized (3"-4") square tubing to the wheel. Weld a plate to the tube top for the vise. Fill the wheel with concrete. When the concrete is at least a week old, give the whole thing a good coat of paint. You could also get a big brake drum of a recycling center.

I was going to suggest mounting a tire on the rim and filling it with concrete

weld the post you using to the wheel
get a plastic bucket and 1 bag of whatever that premix is called
cut tight hole in bottom of bucket, fit over post down onto wheel
mix and pour concrete, let set, weld top mount to post etc

Sounds good, will weld pipe to rim and add the concrete bucket, but will keep top open to slip vise or grinder to top of pipe, one stand, two different top mounts. thanks guy's.
