As the title says, I had a real bad day on Saturday. From start to finish this is how it went.
I got up at 4:30am as I was going to try a new fishing spot. I had got everything ready the night before so I just jumped in the side by side and I was off. I got to the first lake, unloaded the boat and fishing gear and started rowing. Half a mile later I got to the stream I had to go up to get to the lake I wanted to fish. I rowed and poled up the stream about 300 yards and came to a beaver dam. I looked past the dam and there was no water to speak of, just rocks sticking up with a little water. So much for that idea, I was not going to ruin the boat dragging it up there. I went back to the other lake and fished it for a little while and only caught one small trout and threw it back. I came up with a plan and decided to leave. I rowed the half mile back to where I put in and loaded everything up and left.
Now is when it starts getting real good. My plan was to take the side by side way back in the woods to look for a fender flare I had lost last fall and to check and see if I could get the side by side to another lake. I was as pretty much as deep in the woods as I could go and the side by side quit. I could not get it going. I suspected that the fuel pump had died as it is an EFI engine. I started walking. Luckily the bugs were not to bad but it was pretty warm at 80 degrees. I had some water with me and took it. Eleven, yup (11), kilometers later somebody finally came along and picked me up and drove me the rest of the way back to my camp. Am I ever glad they came along, I'm 59 years old and need both knees and one hip replaced and the walking was really starting to get to me. I had a cell phone with me but there was no reception back there so it was mostly added weight. I did manage to get reception just before the guy picked me up. I told the wife what was going on and not to worry as it was about 2pm and I had plenty of time to get back to the camp. I was already more than half way and I had been walking for about 2 hours.
Well, I wasn't going to leave the side by side out there and I knew I could get the truck to it so off I went. I took some tools and other gear just in case I needed them. I got to the side by side and sure enough, the winch that I had never used in 4500 kilometers didn't work. I had 2 heavy duty ratchet straps with me and way able to pull the side by side up on to the truck with them, it just took a little longer and a little more work. So I got it loaded and off I went.
As I was driving out on the logging roads there was one spot that was very rocky. The truck hit one rock a little hard and you guessed it, the side by side jumped and hit the back window and smashed it out. After some cursing I kept on going.
I got to where there was cell phone reception and phoned the wife and let her know I was on the way out with the bike. This is when she informed me that one of our grand-daughters had been in a fight with her boyfriend, it had gotten violent and she needed to be picked up. So much for staying at the camp and drinking my sorrows away. I did manage to pick her up with no incidents and finally made it home a 7:30pm.
I am now sitting here with a very sore and swollen knee that I can't bend to far and looking forward to more beer.
So now if I am having a bad day, I can look back at Saturday and say, "It could be worse". LOL
