What did you do for a throttle cable before the drive by wire by Holley?

OK, I have been going back and forth with my throttle cable option for my 5.7 hemi swap in my Duster. Not sure what direction I want to go. I have a Holley drive by wire pedal in hand but I'm not a fan of fitment mocking it up. I keep trying to talk myself out of it. But I haven't seen a bomb proof mechanical cable setup that everyone is using. I have a factory throttle body that came with my used engine. I also have a Terminator X that will run my 5.7 so I know the drive by wire is probably the way to go but I just am not a huge fan of the thought of the drive by wire gas pedal.

I made a throttle body adapter and use a universal 90mm LS style throttle body. I also had to make the cable bracket for the cable. Lastly, the stroke on the throttle body doesn't match the stroke of the factory pedal, so that requires some bending to get it right. If I were to do it again, I'd probably just go with a drive by wire setup. My ECU doesn't support it, so that's why I'm using a cable throttle. US Car tool is making an adapter now to fit the modern pedals into A,B,&E bodies now. I assume the factory pedal will work with the Holley.

Or you could get real creative.

"On June 4, 1950 Vittie Cothron was running his 1936 Ford Coupe in a stock car race when the accelerator linkage fell off on the last lap. Vittie apparently was a quick-thinking individual, reached through the windshield, held the carburetor open with his right hand and steered the car with his left hand to a third-place finish."

Great info, just what I was looking for. Seems like a bit of work but definitely doable but the drive by wire sure is slick and easy.

I got a good laugh in for the day..thank you sir for that! Great stuff.

It was a fair mount of work, especially when you do it twice. Ugh. I made the first on without the intake on the car. I wanted it to be rotated level, as opposed to on an angle like some of the commercially available adapters. Well, the throttle arm wouldn’t move because it was hitting the “triangle” on the timing cover. I had evenly centered the 90mm hole over the intake 85ishmm hole the first time. The second one, I lined up the bottom and “blended” the larger hole to the smaller on the intake. You can see it in the photo. I’ve cut out much more since then even on the intake side of it too. It had a strange whistling noise initially. It’s just about gone now.

Don't they make hemi specific cable throttles? Any reason for using an ls one?

BBK makes one. It's $400 and mounts on about a 45 degree angle. Looks terrible in my mind. I would have had to make a cable bracket for that also. I also don't know what type of TPS and IAC they use, which is a road I don't want to go down when it comes to tuning it. (I'm familiar with the GM sensors.) I picked up this LS throttle body used on ebay for around $50.

Hi DanP, I'm in the exact same situation as you. I have the original DBW throttle body for my 5.7 and you can get a pedal off ebay fairly cheap. I think I spent $35. But, I prefer to use a cable operated TB so I'm going that route. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned that way (but not old-fashioned enough to run a carburetor). Something about being under the hood of the car and being able to rev the engine.

I ended up spending a lot more on a cable TB than Racerjoe. And then you need to make an adapter as he mentioned. The adapter is not a problem for me, I enjoy fabricating stuff like that. I do not have my setup running yet.

Yeah that was my initial mindset too. I just want a normal cable driven throttle for the same reasons but for all around function and convenience of the Terminator X I guess its going to be drive by wire.

Question.... I was watching a you tube video of guys doing the hemi 6.4 into a Dart, they mentioned you cant use throttle with a cable on the standard manifold, had to be fly by wire?? Why would they think this am i missing something?

That is a good question. Racerjoe included a pic above with a throttle cable and a standard manifold. It's clearly possible. Maybe they were just commenting that Mopar never offered a cable operated throttle body for cars with Gen III Hemi's (which is true).

No idea what they were talking about. With as much good info that is on youtube, there's 1000 times more bad info. Or perhaps they didn't explain well enough. Maybe they are using a stock computer, which won't work with a cable throttle body. You will have to use a stand alone for a cable.
