Thinking about building a stroker out of a 97 mag block I have. Thinking solid roller cam. But not sure what heads will work fine. My L/A edelbrocks are out because this block is not drilled for rocker shaft oiling. Maybe RHS mag heads??? Looking for a 500ish HP street strip motor that will run fine on 93

You could always have the block drilled to use the LA styled edelbrocks. A competent machine shop should be able to handle drilling the 1 hole in each deck surface

I really didn't consider that option. Would be cheaper then a new set of heads. Roller block was given to me so I figured I might as well use it for something. Would rather blow that up as apposed to one of my 340s. Ultimately blowing nothing up would be preferred

I personally am a big fan of roller cams. I would have used that block also. The drilling is a pretty straight forward thing. Its just 1 hole drilled through the deck on either side. We've done it a couple times at the shop I work at.

Better just send it to me. I don't want you stress over it.

Wish it were an early roller. late 80s early 90s ,but it was given to me so id like to make it work

I don't get it you have great heads and want to go solid roller, but you got a free magnum block so you would rather spend $1000-$2000 on a new heads instead of a $100-200 on a block or maybe a trade.

Good point, the only benefit of the roller block imo is saving money in the hyd roller lifter depot 'u can use stock lifters', otherwise solid roller lifters cost the same as if u were using a LA block...

there could be a way to plumb some oil to the shafts if one wanted to tap into the top of the cam bore and run 1/4 hard line up between the push rods and tap into the side of a rocker stand...

Putting it that way makes much more sense. Ill see if my machine shop can drill the block for reasonable. If not ill look to trade or I do have a 91 roller 318 that is drilled. Does the bigger 360 bore make that much more power or should I just do a 402 and use what I have. I imagine a roller 402 with eddy heads that flow 275 @ .600 would make descent power. I just figured more 408 pistons to choose from. Also what kind of power can be achieved with the oem style hydrolic roller lifters? Max lift they are good for?

a 4" stroked,.030 overbored 318 would be a 390, just an fyi

He's talking about .090" overbore to 4" with a 4" stroke = 402

And about the roller 318 block, if they can't drill your magnum I'd still look for a 360.

Anyone got an early roller 360 for reasonable? Shipping probably be to much. Most of the local yards have already crushed all the 80s and early 90s vehicles. If I can find one id pass the 97 along to anyone who can use it. Have the mag heads that came on it as well. 90K mile motor that spun a rod bearing. block and heads are fine.

a .090 over 318...stay clear of that grenade

I wouldn't try the drilling opreation. It's not just "a hole in the deck". It has to connect to the small hole in the cam bearing bore that's 6" of solid iron away. It's not easy.
Find an LA 360 core or block. Much cheaper.

If your going to use a solid roller instead of a Hyd roller theres no reason to start with a roller block over a non roller block.

If you want to use Mag block and a hyd roller cam your choices for heads are Edelbrock Magnums, EQ magnums or Indy Magnum Xs. I dont know if you can just bolt of the Indy LA X heads with out drilling the block like you would have to for any other LA heads.

The cast iron is very easy to drill, but I can understand if people are afraid to drill it out

Maybe ill just go back to plan A. 416 out of a fresh .030 340 with a solid flat tappit cam. I was 2nd guessing the idea because it seems to be a waste of a beautiful 69 340 block. Also have a 72 360 block that cleaned up nice @ 4.020. Too many options... Maybe the 72 360 is my best choise so I can use my edelbrocks and save the 340 for a resto piece.

Use the 360, for all the reasons mentioned above regarding solid roller usage. Not really a waste of your 340 either unless its a numbers matching block for your car, but if built correctly for the 500HP you are looking for it is not going to grenade. Good luck with your build!
