What is it with some people..

-
Post and PM are time stamped, IIRC.

JMO, saying I'd like the mirror and what's the price is decent commitment statement. Only saying "how much for the mirror", nope no commitment there. Seller can do as they please. As a seller, on small stuff, I get a total together and send my payment info and time the offer dies. No response next person up.

Some in here speak of how hard its become to transact. Funny about hanging me out on some parts I had for sale, talking about being short on funds, something comes up for sale at 3-4x cost of my parts for sale, I'm second in line and they snag the part. I turned down others that wanted the parts I had for sale because of the old "I'll have it in a couple weeks" bs. Yeah sure. Never again.

Most of the members here are solid on stuff when it comes to buying/selling. There are a few, some know the names, that abused the system and peoples trust.

Just knowing someone's zip or city is incredibly broad and to find out where they live would take a LOT of effort.
Not so sure about that. I live in a county where there's only one fast food restaurant (McDonalds), one high school, and one supermarket in the entire county. And though all that may make it sound remote, I'm still close enough to large population centers that we still have heavy traffic during rush hour from surrounding areas on three sides. The zip code or town name would almost be a dead giveaway.

I got a call from someone about a relay kit... all the info he had to start with was my screen name and zip. Decent detective work. Found my phone number on the net... The world is small now.

This guy has a whole bunch of awesome Mopar's, for the low sum of one thousand dollars, I can provide the precise location.

Just kidding Jim, JUST KIDDING!

LOL!! Yes. Yes you could. And I know you aren't the only one here who could provide the precise location.

Remember recently, there was a new member selling a NOS 340 Thermoquad for cheap. I thought it was a scam and several people made similar comments, but he was serious. Somebody on here bought it and had it on Ebay for 750.00. That's the way the cookie crumbles I guess.

I sold a slant six Hyper Pak to a guy who just had to have it, always wanted one etc…he had it up on eBay for double my price the next day!

I was the first person to say I wanted an engine for sale on here. We made plans for the purchase/delivery. Then the guy messages me and says he decided to sell it to someone else. What a jerk.
Had that same experience with a car that was for sale here. I messaged the OP saying I was interested and was curious about interior pictures, and was also the first to reply. I get a message that said "sure thing, I'll get them in the morning". In the morning I get a message that said "I sold it to someone who didn't want pictures of the interior". I was already planning the grab a friends car hauler to head up there. Didn't have the decency to respond to my message about conducting business in this sort of manner. These type of people are all over this site, unfortunately.....

Agreed!

Way more of them here than most members would think.

Selling on the internet there's a ton of flakes. That's why I wanted to know if the OP really didn't contact the seller for over 24 hours after the seller posted the price. Because having someone ask for the price and then disappear is not at all unusual. If someone said "I want it, how much" and then didn't respond after I posted the price, well, there's a time limit on that. I'm not gonna hold the part for days on end just to see if that first person gets back to me if I have other buyers.

I don't think it's entirely on the seller to hold the buyers hand and walk them through the buying process. If someone asks me "how much" and I reply with the price and don't hear back, I'd send that person 1 message. That's it. If you haven't contacted me again in 24 hours I'm moving on. It would be nice if people always replied something like "thanks for getting back to me, that's more than I want to spend", but in many cases people just ghost you. So if the first person to call "dibs" just disappears for a day or two it can totally kill the sale, the seller could lose several buyers in that time and that first person may never follow through.

It sucks, I agree, because if you want to buy something on here you have to move really fast sometimes. Especially if it's a desirable item. But if you really want something you have to be prepared to at least remain in contact with the seller until you complete the sale.
I agree. I don't know the details of the OP's transaction (or lack thereof), and I don't wish to get involved, I was just trying to say that things nowadays aren't the same as they were 20, 15, even 5 years ago. And this goes for both sellers and buyers.

Depends on the city and zip code. If you live in a city or zip code with a hundred thousand people, yeah, not giving away much. If you live in a zip code or city with only a few thousand people, well, might not be all that hard to find out where they live from there.

I hadn't thought about the small town scenario. I lived in a small town in Montana and saw the same cars driving the same streets, every day. You knew everyone.

If you don't want to say where you are, that's your business. But for me, I don't give a hoot if someone knows where I'm at. Come get me.

For an avatar, a cartoon character, a picture of a car, even a race car number is sensible. Using a picture of a good looking woman when you are a man gives off a creepy and deceptive vibe.
I used a cartoon filter over the original but my avatar is me.

I used the cartoon filter because the original shows skin flaws and the reasons I am not much for selfies

I agree with a lot of this.

I have been buying parts from sellers here since 2017 and have come across some real "jewels" selling parts here.

One I remember was selling trim. I responded immediately via Pm , didn't dispute the price , was first to respond and only wanted to know full price including shipping to my address. Never got a response after. This person is constantly on here selling , how I don't know. A complete Fu#king idiot and time waster.

Some advice for the Canadians on here. Find one of the reputable sellers on here and use them as much as you can. When you need something, contact them. Its a good chance they have it or know where to get it.

Some of the best people I found on here to deal with. I'm sure there are others..

Davescuda
Barracudakid
Grampstamp
Hemifiedbird
Rat Rod Al
4SpeedRagtop
Laysons
Brewers
HemiDenny
Bergman Autocraft
Rat rod al is a genuine sweetheart.

Great seller and I think him and Mrs. Theresa are great people.

You're better than I am then. If someone were to ask for a price and I don't hear back, I assume he didn't like the price. I'm not going to go looking for him to see if he wants it. I assume he didn't like the price, which is fine.

I guess I don't have too many problems selling stuff because nobody wants what I have to sell :). And I really don't try and sell much. But I have the policy that if I get multiple responses, the first contact actually saying they want the part get's first dibs and I don't differentiate between a PM or a post in the ad. That's just me though.

I had a remote oil filter setup that I sold years ago that I thought was drained but showed up at the buys house all wet with oil. Still feel bad about that one. One other deal that went bad in the end. But other than that, haven't had issues I can remember buying or selling stuff here.

One thing I do wish people would do is let me know they got the part. When I buy something, I try and let the seller know I got it just so they know it wasn't snatched off the porch or something. Just a minor curtesy in my mind.

Its all on the net.

Now that I think about it, there was one post on a site a long time ago that someone mentioned my name. hmmmmm Yeah, delete those tweets that stick around like rancid gas. :)

Dang right.... theres a news story near here....
Someone found a lost bird, parakeet maybe.....posted on Facebook, found the right owner, gave it back. End of story?? Hell NO! Some other jackass who lost his bird broke into her house to retrieve it. Pretty scary stuff. No ones sure how or why they had her staked out like that.

So a third party got into the mix, wow

Coming from Canada, I couldnt agree more. Shipping is outrageous, and THEN we Canadians have pay exchange on top of all that. I just found a pair of door weatherstrips on here for $100, the seller checked on shipping to me and it was 95 frickin dollars, for a pair of lightweight door weatherstrips! USPS even! I couldnt believe it. And then duty charges on top of that, and who knows what tariff **** on top of that also! I really wanted the parts, but I just cant pay that. And I feel shitty cause the seller went to the hassle of finding that info out for me and I dont follow through with the sale, but at least I was upfront and honest with him.
I feel yer pain! About 10 years back I found a place to get OE parts for my old Triumph MC. About $200 for odds 'n' ends...and another 200 for shipping. I dread to know what the cost would be now.

What I find is PMs get mixed up really easily, different headings etc. And once read or replied to the PM is no longer in date time received order. The AD on the other hand has a strict chronology if I post about a part, even 1 second before another, I'm first in the line of posts. BUT I HAVE TO FOLLOW THROUGH WITH A PM in a reasonable amount of time!!!!! IIRC edits to a post show an Edited date and time BUT the chronology is maintained so that is a potential issue. Perhaps the site owner could prevent edits from posts in sale ADs

Many times the shipping is a deal killer and that is understandable. No one really knows how much something is to ship with out packaging and an address. I use GoShippo.com and when I only get a zip code I look up a random address in the zip code to use for a shipping estimate. Most of the time the price stays the same but sometimes it changes with the real address. Also Shippo shows me several carriers prices for the same package and I can choose the cheapest or quickest.

I for one would never be upset with someone for backing out based on shipping costs. Also I would NEVER back out of a sale because someone else offered me more or was closer or would pick it up.

Someone brought up paid vs free membership. Free membership generates ad revenue to the site owner where the paid membership does not. So my paid membership is paying that missing ad revenue, it all comes out in the wash.

I have had nothing but great buying and selling experiences here (a couple less than stellar packaging issues - So I don't buy from those sellers anymore, I keep a list on my PC)

MY LAST point is if you have an item for sale and you post an AD, for the love of all that is Mopar, clear out your Inbox!!!!!!
'preciate that link, Dana! Eventually will get my but in Gear and move a few of the things I've accumulated and always wondered about shipping and costs as I've not shipped much of anything. That will be helpful.
