what to soak dirty parts in?

-
Oh it does, but is super stinky. Will strip rust right off stamped steel parts and leave clean pitted steel. But yeah, did I mention its stinky. If you get it on your skin you will smell really stinky too until it wears off your skin.
How stinky? What ratio of water? I have a 300 gallon water tank I've been thinking of sawing the top off for big projects. Am i going to piss my neighbors off kind of stinky if I put a lid on it? Am I going to smell it too. I can have it 100 feet away from all of us.

This like most all threads here go from OP says can't smell bad or basically able to set his home ablaze.
Most don't read and post things that can, work and, what will meet what the OP requirements are.
Just like threads like tune my 318-2bbl ends up with guys posting how to build new HP engine

AI says this...

Mix 1 part molasses with 9 parts water (a 1:9 ratio) in a container, then submerge rusty items for one to two weeks. The solution works via chelation, requiring no active scrubbing, though some residue may require a wire brush afterward. It is safe for most metal, though it may remove paint and produce a pungent smell.
Key Details for Using a Molasses Bath:
  • Ratio: 1 part molasses to 7-10 parts water is standard.
  • Time: Allow 1–2 weeks for heavy rust; check periodically.
  • Process: The mixture will produce mold on top and a strong, sour smell, which is normal.
  • Post-Soak: Remove items, scrub with a wire brush, and rinse thoroughly.
  • Best for: Large, heavily rusted items (like engine parts or tools) where immersion is easy.
This method is highly effective for restoring old iron, but it is a slow process that requires patience.

Nobody mentioned that the difficult part is catching enough Moles to get a decent amount of Mole asses to put in the mixture! :poke:

Yeah....still winter. The G hog in PA has spoken.

I've used that stuff on my camper. never thought about parts cleaning with it. i probably have that at home too
