Hello FABO boys and girls,
So on my 74 valiant 4 door when she was started awhile back while in park the speedo pegged to 30mph while in park:banghead:
It did this for about a minute then the needle dropped to zero. Ever since it dropped to zero it does not work even when actually moving:wack:
Would this be a problem with the speedo itself or could it be something with the speedo drive gear in the tranny?
Any insight on this issue would be great and appreciated

What all is there between the speedometer and the transmission, Emilio? Does it go through a cruise control for instance?

The speedo drive is on the trannie output shaft, connected to the drive shaft. If the car is not moving the speedo drive gear can't be moving or turning the speedo cable. So....something has to be between the gear (trannie) and the actual speedo that is turning the cable....or the speedo just broke in a strange way.

Was the speedo behaving 100% Ok before this? Not bouncing or anything like that? Did it ever show a speed indication while in park or not moving?

Pull the innards of the cable out. If it still in one piece lube it up....have had dry cables do all sorts of weird things....

^^^ This! I have had them do all sorts of weird things too.....Not moving at all, needle bouncing erratically , making noise, reading twice the speed it should and making noise only when cold, when warm it was fine.....if the cable is sticking in the sheath it can do all sorts of things.....even if you are not moving....the stored up energy can unstick itself even when not moving
