What's this car that I saw at the junkyard today?

-
I always wanted a 225 4 speed wagon. I saw one on a used car lot already sold. I'd missed it by a day!
in the late 70's,early 80's, I worked at a hardware store and an older man would drive his wagon into the center and go shopping. He would get out, have a cane and hobble to whichever store he was shopping at. One day, he came in to have a key made. Our high school employee made on e and the fellow went out to try it. He came in very upset that the key was now stuck in the ignition! The young employee went out and tried to figure out what was wrong. No success. He comes back in, almost hiding because he's afraid he is going to get caned. I go out, ask the owner if I can have a look. I get in the car and notice it is a 4-speed. ( should have asked if he wanted to sell it but I was stupid ). Anyway, yes, the key is stuck...BUT...after pushing the clutch in, shifting into reverse, it came out as smooth as silk. Sorry, long story about a wagon I should have asked to buy.

I owned this car when my wife and I were first dating. She needed a car so I gave it to her. She loved that car and the attention it brought to her. She’s the one on the left with the big hair!

I came so close to gettin one of those FOR FREE. It was a runnin and drivin car. Under 100K miles. The guy who did the tat on my elbow told me to come get it. A couple of days later, he died from a massive stroke and his family ended up with it. It's gone now. It was white with wood grain on the sides in perfect condition with like a saddle colored interior.

Oh man ! I hit Like then had to remove it, I would have liked to see you own it, but him passing away like he did I felt weird hitting the like @RustyRatRod

They are neat cars to drive. I like rolling in this better than any of the A bodies I have.

I had a wagon that was in great shape. Motor and tranny were already gone but it was a /6 904 combo. Should have kept it. It was white with a red interior. Sadly I got tired of looking at it and sold it.

I remember seeing quite a few F/M/J body cars back in the late 70's and 80's.

Not too many Road Runners, though, and I didn't see an Aspen R/T until about 1990.

I did however, drive a factory purple (OK, it was burgundy), Aspen wagon with a factory 360 and a 4 speed with rallye wheels that spent the night at the service station I worked at.
That was around 1986.

Volares always get a bad rep...no one liked them I'm not sure why. I'm guessing they got rid of the A body which by 76 was hassle free and the Volare had issues? i dont know was before my time driving I was a kid in 76.

The F body cars followed after what was a very reliable platform, the A body. It would be like following John Holmes at the brothel.
The F body cars all had catalytic converters and other equipment to meet emission limitations that the A bodies didn’t have to meet. Chrysler struggled as did other automakers to meet these requirements while maintaining some measurements of performance. Many feel that Chrysler used the buying public as the Research and Development instead of doing it in house. This meant that all flaws and defects were dealt with by customers and dealers. This of course resulted in terrible publicity and declining sales. It surely factored into the bankruptcy and bailout.

When i was 15 in 1983 i bought a 79 aspen R/T black with the gold strips factory ralley wheels it had a beige interier buckets console 318 two barrel it was like new , I just loved that car , it was a pleasure to drive . I beat the supreme guts outta that car and couldn't kill it but rust won in the end. I have never seen another one like it , if anyone knows for one like it let me know i have CASH .

I knew a guy who bought a new '76 Aspen R/T, 318, 4spd OD. He wanted a 360, but they only came with automatics.
My old dog '69 Impala w/ a 255 HP 350 and powerglide smoked him easily.
Some friends and I partnered on an old VW bug that we took the body off of and ran it in the woods. Completely stock and well worn. It smoked him too.
It was the feds fault, but almost all cars from '72 through the late 80's were dogs.
I bought an '87 Mustang LX 5.0 (new) that ran a best of 13.95 in REALLY good air, stock down to the air filter silencer and timing. (Still have it.) That was when cars came back.

man thats a shame
but to most people, they are just cars

it was the same with our A bodies in the 80s
Yeah, here is a prime example of it in this eighties episode of "The Twilight Zone." Like this '71 Dart at the 3:06 mark that I suspect was bought off of a dealer lot and then destroyed in a stunt at the 15:57 mark.

Disagree about 72 cars or really a lot of the early to mid 70's.

If you really do the math, there's only about a 5% decrease in "power" from 71 to 72, and that certainly does not equate to a "huge loss".

Been a while since i watched that show, when i have a minute Ill watch the whole episode

Funny you mention this though, i just watched a Dutch movie about an ambulance driver

Everyone in the movie drives brand new Mercedes ambulances, but the main guy drives an old Ford

Which made sense to me when the movie ended 'vanishing point' style

Yes Volare' Dusters do exist.. They are not real dusters by any means.. but an apperance package.
Here is mine..

I've had a couple of these as drag cars over the years because they used to be easy and cheap to find. Not so much any more. They respond to performance mods the same as any other car and can be real fast if you don't have to retain all the emissions equipment. Last one I had was an '80 that was rock solid, not a trace of rust anywhere, although it had a fair number of dings in it. It would run low 12s in Denver with a strong 360. Never drove one on the street but I'd guess they are like any old Mopar. They are the length of an A body with the width of a B body. They'll swallow a big block pretty easily.

I had my sisters 4dr 79 Aspen for a while. It was nearly rust free. Especially the fenders, you could tell by the paint falling off the galvanizing underneath.

If your serious, I just bought a 78 aspen Super Coupe shell. I had it shipped out of Utah. It has the OE flairs, spoilers and gas cap (rough). I was going to 6.1/TKO it since the drivetrain is gone. It hasn't come out of the trailer since it arrived, I'm horrible with impulse buying. PM me if interested, it might give me incentive to look at it.
