What's this hole for on a small block bellhousing shield

Wondering why this hole is there? Water and dirt could get in.

it only goes one way as the starter hole's the other side.

i wouldn't worry about anything getting in there, unless you sealed all the joints in the area water could get in anyway. in fact without that plate or the bottom cover the clutch will stay cooler extending it's life. unless you're off roading you'll be fine.

That hole was placed there to make you ask questions.

It's where the engine to Trans brace bolts thru. Guess your not using them.
