Wheel cylinders

Replaced rear wheel cylinders on 72 Demon.. When brake pedal is pressed, only one side of the cylinder pushes out.. both drivers and passenger side does this.. Is this normal..? Does the drum need to be on for the cylinder to function differently..?

That's a good way to blow the pistons out of the cylinder.
