I notice that a lot of people refer to wheels as "rims". Why is that and is there a difference that I am not seeing?

Can someone explain

Yes. There are two parts to the wheel. The center, that bolts to the hub and the rim which is the outer ring that the tire installs on. This is very well documented on most any good wheel site. It's not an opinion, or up for debate. It's solid FACT. Those are the individual technical names of the wheel.

That said, wheels are for muscle cars. Rims are for ghetto hoopty garbage. Nuff said.

This is kinda like the hubcap and wheel cover discussion.

I think what RRR is trying to say is that wheels are usually 14-16 inches, though sometimes as larger as 17
18 and over would be rims (and ugly) :banghead:

And all these years Ive been calling an assembled tire and rim, a wheel! Like a semi-tractor wheel; which was/is an assembly, including the tire and the rim, and is bolted on to a hub.
So if I have a stock assy aired-up-ready to bolt onto a 68 Impala, what should I be calling it?

Depends on how much tread is left on the tire. No tread? The assembled tire and rim/wheel/mag Is called a Maypop.:burnout:

Wheels spin clockwise, rims spin counter-clockwise....

does that mean that when I drive forward the rolling stock on the drivers side are rims and the ones on the passengers side are wheels?

Wheel and rim are the SAME thing..different people call them by different names, just like a motor or an engine...

This is a wheel

.

This is a rim. "Budd" is a popular brand name that used to make these type systems, AKA "Budd wheels"

So many call "either either"

The huge star shape center is all part of a massive hub/ drum, only the outer rim unclamps and is removed with the tire

Budd or Dayton: Notice "no center"

Many mobile home axles use those types of rims

And.......a lot of people including me call them "wheels"

Thank you RRR!!! I'm not sure why but this has always been a peeve of mine.:D:D:D. The "rim" is the outer edge of a wheel. Just ask your dictionary!:book::book:

Sorry...can't agree with this! A "motor" is electric. Period. :D the power plant under the hood of your car is an internal combustion "ENGINE" !! Of course the wipers and heater are powered by motors... :D

That is the most idiotic thing I have ever seen. And the caveman invented the wheel. Not a rim.
