I have a chevy colorado 2wd that's lowered with 4.5" of ground clearance and it's never bottomed out. Also got everywhere in the winter no sweat. I have a Chevy Cruze now for a DD and the thing is like a winter tank with some studless snowtires. They don't plow always (unlikely in light snow falls) but any big storm they will plow no problem.

Crime isn't really that bad anywhere except Detroit, Pontiac, Redford, and some parts of Southfield. Troy, Farmington Hills, Livonia, Rochester Hills, Lake Orion, Oxford, Clarkston are really low crime.
 

Still waiting for the offer to come through. Short work week I know, and it hasn't been a week since the interview. So yeah, I am anxious to going back to work. My friend, the interviewer, walked me through and introduced me to one of the techs. His name will be easy to remember ad it I the same as mine, Leonard. This guy also restores cars. Cool! I am being jerked around by those in Troy. I have to reapply, FOR THE THIRD TIME to this job. The third time not until the 19th of October, reason being that it has to be done internally for 10 business days. Dude just found out about the other posting today? It is one thing or another. The other times were because of problems with the posting itself. So screw it, if and when I should be offered, I will ask for what I had before. To hell with them.

Skilled trades, Engineers, Toolmakers, maintenace mechanics, electricians. We are an automotive supply company making rubber and plastice weatherstrips.
 
I worked in the R&D lab for Akzo Nobel developing and supporting both plant and customer problem batches under supervision of chemists. Mainly 2k urethanes, but some epoxy topcoats and epoxy primers. Coatings used on aircraft, Boeing, Airbus, Embraer, and other manufacturers.
 
Well, I have received an offer and the paperwork is started. Tentative start date of December 14th. The offer was very nice, with more money to start than I left with, 3 weeks vacation to start with, and relo money. Over all not a bad offer.
 
I'm just across the river in Canada. Right now your US money is worth about 35% more.

I have friends all over Michigan not including the rest of the guys who posted. My good friend lives in Fraser and loves it.

goldduster318 - that Colorado you have happen to be a v8 one? I have a 2011 Canyon v8 crew cab. Never had an issue in snow.

I work in Troy and live in Flushing...About 60 miles one way. I grew up in Sterling Heights so I know the area very well. Like others have said, I-75 runs through Troy and from there you can get anywhere. North to Auburn Hills/Clarkston is a nice area, East to Sterling Heights, Utica, Macomb Twp....West puts you in a more affluent area...Birmingham, Bingham Farms, Bloomfield.

Troy has the nicest mall in the state...Somerset. Top notch stores and $$$

I work down the road from the Lamborghini dealer, so you know there's $$$ in the area. :)

My job moved here from the Chicago area in 93 and I came along, very glad I did.

One big thing (besides keeping my job which I really liked) was that property values were lower here so my wife and I were able to get something that we really wanted that was just out of reach in Ill.

Whether you want to live in town or semi rural and have a little space you should be to find something you like, from modestly priced to sky's the limit.

In our case we found a nice place on 3 acres of partially wooded property on the edge of a small town. I was working in Troy, it was about a 33 mile drive that took a minimum of 40 minutes, traffic and weather conditions could push it up a bit.

There's also a pretty good car scene in S.E. Michigan, from May through Sept. you can find something going on every night of the week if you want to drive a little. There is a local publication called Cruisinews that lists most of it.

Plus there's the Detroit Autorama in Feb. or March every year, it's one of the best and oldest shows in the country.
 
Well, boss said I will be starting on the 14th of Dec. I have yet to receive official confirmation from the company itself, but I read the email that was sent to him. He forwarded it to me. So I will try to nail it down tomorrow, and if so then will head out there on Tuesday to start looking for a place to stay. Sucks to move so far away, well far to me anyway. But I want to look at it as a new, fresh start and I can do a lot there. Like others have said, houses are cheaper there, and I will only have to be there 10 or at most 15 years. Thanks to everyone who has commented.
 
Welcome to the Mitten way of life!! You'll like it here I think, lots of things to do all the time! Cruises in the summer, sledding in the winter, Woodward, ....we got it all!!!
 
Ok, I have confirmation that I start on the 14th. So there will be a Bear fan and a Blackhawks fan coming to your area. Will I still be welcome? LOL
 
I'm about halfway between Chicago and Milwaukee and east of I-94. I still can go less than 2 miles and be around many corn/soybean fields. Even pumpkin, cabbage and other veggies. Kinda suburban, but very close to rural. Go west of I-94 and it's basically farmland with a few dairy farms tossed in. Not as many as when I grew up, but there are a few still. Definitely going to miss my home, but I gotta do what I gotta do. It won't be all bad, I will at least know about three others from my home area. Gotta think and be positive!!!!

Don't just limit yourself to looking in Troy, there are a lot of really nice areas that are close to Troy and with I-75 right there it's easy to get to the surrounding areas. I live in Clarkston it's north of Troy, it takes me about 20 minutes to get to Troy via I-75

Congrats on the job finally going through and welcome to your new place. Bears fans are ok Lions play them again soon.
 
Too bad the Lions didn't beat the cheeseheads from Greenbay.
And yeah, I'm not limiting myself to just Troy. Still gotta figure out what to do with my car. Still haven't registered yet cause of title issues. Until I sell my house in WI, I'm screwed for options. Oh well, I have a job.
 
Good news is I have a place to stay. Bad news is its an apartment, no garage, 1 year lease. So my car will go into storage for a year. I couldn't get another house right away. I was only given 5 business days to to find a place...... But its good to have a job! I wont have to give it up, that's a good thing.
 
Three days down in Lake Orion. Pronounced oree on, not like I'm used to. Being away from what I did as long as I was, I'm finding it coming back to me quickly. Good thing!! Now to get internet and cable Friday I'll be better off. Sad how much I miss it these days...... LOL. Going back to WI this weekend to pack some more stuff, PC and desk/chair, coffee table, table for my birds and the birds themselves. Then I'll have another live thing to interact with. And what I have in the freezer and fridge. Commute in the morning ain't bad at all, but the drive after sucks. About 30 minutes in the morning, but at least an added 15 minute at night. But it is a rural area, nice and quiet. Spring and summer might be louder cause of frogs, lol, but that'll be ok. Apt is not bad size and reasonably priced, so things aren't that bad. It is what it is. If I feel like I'm under a lemon tree, then time to start making lemonade.
