Many of you know I use Linux. Years ago I used SUSE am thinking of going back. Some of the politics and dirty infighting within Ubuntu is frankly, irritating. SUSE is one of the oldest, and stable, not to mention also commercial platforms out there. And a quick google shows documentation on installing the Mint desktop which I really like.

My "history" with Linux since about 2000 has been (for various perieds) SUSE, Red Hat, other, other , other LOL, SUSE, Ubuntu, (Ubuntu Unity bleackhhhhhh) Mint, various Mint, Mint "Mate," and now Ubuntu Mate.

So once again I'm thinking about "being converted"

Thoughts?

And no, Winehoused hat------eigh hate is NOT on the table. Neither is whiningdozed tin

You mean you don't like Windows Socialist Edition? :D
No exp with SUSE here unfortunately in regard to your question.

Well now we've done it!!! Got the 4.3 GB ISO nearly downloaded, 10 minutes to go AND IT FAILED the download. WTF knows of course, whether it's the server, my provider, or just one of those glitches in the space time continuum? LOL. So Now we start all over and wait another hour.........................

I have TWO Thinkpad T520 laptops, so I'll use one of 'em for a guina pig

I like Fedora myself. I have it on my workstation at my job and on my laptop at home. Been pretty stable for the most part aside from some driver issues with Nvidia.

I can't figure out Fedora's installer, LOL. The first draft of SUSE has been a fail. I can't figure out, there's some error regarding repositories. Googling this makes it worse. I can't figure out, yet, if this is a SUSE problem or a "me" problem.

Are you doing any special partitioning or dual booting with windows? The installer worked pretty well for me, although I was just using the whole computer for the install. With partitions, I usually use 3, root, home & swap. I give about 20gb to root, and about 8gb for swap (I have 16gb ram, don't really need that much swap space.). Anyways, if I can help, let me know.

I'm "stalled" for now. My operational computer is dual boot W7 / Ubuntu Mate. For the experimental install, I'm using a second identical laptop and a spare hd, so the dual boot thing is not a factor.

The problem I cannot find a way around (I'm not an "expert" even though I use Linux a lot) --- is the repositories error in SUSE.

One reason I would like to "re enter" SUSE is that this is an old, stable system, "seems" to have less political infighting than Ubuntu, and is also widely used commercially. (Obviously, so is Fedora / Redhat)

One "glitch" I cannot figure out in Fedora is the opening network setup screen. The terminology they use is much different. I'll have to actually get a camera and take some screen shots LOL

EDIT Trying a re-install of SUSE. For some reason I started out with the new "LEAP 42" version which does not seem to be the LTS version. The terminology I ran into did not convey this clearly for some reason.

Depending on how this goes, I may try Fedora later. One problem is, I have a "whole bunch" of IDE hard drives, and very few SATA drives "spare." I've been thinking of buying yet another solid state drive for the other laptop.

SSD REALLY REALLY speeds up an older computer!!!

Just got back from BestBuy and only missed 8 minutes of "Mr Dillon" and Chester LOL

New PNY 480GB SSD, and a logitech Bluetooth moose. This frees up the other USB wireless mouse for the "other" laptop

Ah ok, Wasn't sure of your exact install. What kind of repo error are you getting in SUSE?

SSDs are very fast. I have them in all my "boot" drives

I get several depending on what I have 'clicked.' Some of the Google results are suggesting that this is a bit of a long term issue. If I can't figure this out soon, I'm going to go back to Ubuntu Mate. At the moment I'm installing W7 on a partition on the new hard drive. Incidently, I finally succeeded in getting a "universal" W7 installer onto a USB stick. This is INCREDIBLY faster than a CD / DVD!!! And, of course, is how I deal with Linux, too.

This might take awhile, as I'm doing some playing, LOL
