Why o why

I agree with needs, when I got my valiant it horribly backfired and idled rough, found it it was one of the leads for my ignition coil arcing with the windshield wiper motor

This reminds me of one other thing. My 40 RR, ran like this. The coil tower had a crack in it and it was firing onto the plus and minus posts, The spark was coming out from under the coil wire boot and had created a carbon track. You can see this at night as was suggested before. You can hear it too.

OK fellas, posts,21- 24-26, I think your on to something. I pulled carb, power valve tests ok. reinstalled. Found and put on new cap+rotor. same crap. So I decided to back space each wire one terminal, fire it up and it runs. Wth? This is blowing my mind. I`ve been running car all summer and it was running great, now with the wires backspaced it idles good with no back fire, but when I try to rev it up it wants to backfire, and engine shakes pretty bad. Always did shake a little? I did get zapped turning diz, so plug wires are arcing somewhere I guess. I know I did`nt put wires on wrong because I had to pull more wire through the loomes to reach the next terminal? I`m gonna check tonight for arcing and order a new set of wires from summit. hopefully new wires will straighten this baby out8)

Iv'e been known to mist a little water on the wires just to help the situation along a little bit.

Been a few days, still chipping at it a little here and there. Sprayed water at night, doused coil/cap/wires, good and could`nt see a spark? Took a good plug and used a jumper ground and plugged each wire into it, while it was running. Every wire was fireing the plug. Installed my winter plugs, factory heat range, No difference? When I get a chance, I need to test, diz pickup, spray around intake/look for vacume leaks, etc. I e-mailed Holley for a question, with no response yet, maybe someone here will know. When I was checkin out my carb, holley st. avenger, I removed the vac secondary cap and noticed the diaghram was sunk to the bottom of the pod. Is that correct? Then I`ll pull valve covers n check there.:clock: Gotta go check in later

WooHoo:cheers:, Found the problem. Now I`ll sleep better tonight8) Guess what it was. I`ll give you a hint, 1`st post. I`m going to celebrate, hitten the pub, treatin myself to a good meal and a few drinks. The correct answer wins you a big cyber pat on the back:toothy10: Later

You can't leave us hanging like this!!!!!!

Sorry, But my celebration, was premature, did`nt get my good meal/drinks, brought car back home before it left me stranded:angry7: But I`m almost home with the diagnosis. Somehow the reluctor rollpin found its way out of the slot, thus the thinking of diz slipping, makes sense does`nt it? Still has a terrible surge. Maybe the pin decided to take a hike again, if not I`m gonna rotate the reluctor to the other slot, and hopefully that will cure my heart break. On the way home sitting at a light, some jackass in a big expedition or something powerbraked right behind me, squalling his tires. If only she was running good I would of given him some debris in his grill. Probably for the best, cause just around the bend 2 State boys were corraling a car and would of been in ear shot. I`ll let you responders know how it works out:clock:

Sounds like you need another distributor. Issues like that tend to keep haunting you. What I mean is that it sounds like the roll pin has lost some of it's interference fit due to wear. I would swap in another good used dizzy.

I`m not gonna jump too quick on another diz. I`m certain it`s written somewhere, that you replace rollpins with each removal, like cotter keys, yet some of us, reuse em:clock:
Good news!! swapped reluctor hole, She`s back to normal:cheers: terrible phaseing you might say? lol Shoulda put a new roll pin in, but too much of a hurry to see if this fixed it. I`ve got this diz. r&r down to a science now, I`ll put a new roll pin in soon. In retrospect, Maybe I did`nt install rollpin in correctly back when I was limiting my timeing? the slot extends quite below the reluctor, come to find out anything below about an 8th in. will interfere with plate?, so hopefully it`s just the pin, lost its tension. Thanks anyhow fellas:thumbrig: Now, where was I going last night? Oh yeah! celebrate!!:drinkers:
