I am in the process of rebuilding the wiring harnesses on my ’64 Barracuda (actually making all new). I have incorporated many changes to the circuits. The changes include: square-back alternator, electronic ignition and voltage regulator, headlight relays, and upsized wire gauges. I want to document and redraw the wiring diagrams. Can anyone recommend a program to allow me to draw new circuit diagrams? Has anyone use Digikey’s “Scheme IT”? A free program would be ideal.

Thanks in advance, Ken

Even though I have been a career electrical guy, I have used Power Point for things like you are describing. I got tired of schematic programs constantly changing and not doing what I want. They are generally optimized to lay out circuit boards, not wiring diagrams, which is more like what you want. I will have to say I am not up on the latest offerings for schematic capture, however.

I made a library of symbols like connectors, resistors, capacitors & etc and use them over. There are many free clones of Power Point for Windows and Apple.

Not a very high tech solution, but then I am not a very high tech guy. Would rather spend my time building something than fighting a computer.

I’ve rebuilt the complete electrical system in my 65 SDD (Sedan Delivery Dart), incorporating elements of how the factory did it and my changes based on an 82 J Body. For example, I just copied the factory schematic circuit for the power tailgate window as that’s how I built the wiring. I incorporated parts of the under dash circuitry from an 82 J Body and copied it from the 82FSM while adding my own little changes. Under the hood was more challenging to do a schematic as all power goes through a maxi fuse fuse and relay box before going to the bulkhead connector. I used the idea of separate Schematics for each section i.e. one for the headlight circuit, another page for the charging circuit. The factory must have thought that was a good idea so I just did the same. Got each hand drawn circuit page in a binder for both me and the next owner
