I'm here
Sick week cars plastered our area, most going right by my house. I have this to say:
Very cool and very fast cars. I know. We as humans only know what fast is by comparing amongst ourselves.
But back in the day, the cars were counted as just as fast, because we still compared ourselves among ourselves. Back when a 340 Duster running 13.3's in street form was fast. My, how far we've come. But I don't think it's as fun. Not when 8 second cars run the streets, with more money in safety equipment than we'd spend on our entire car.

We had hot rods and pro street cars. Hot rods were your average guy throwing cam and headers, maybe gears at his camaro, mustang, or Dart. Pro street cars had tubs, blowers, and the such. Even they were 10 and 11 second cars. And they didn't build it to race a 350 4bbl with headers in that 74 Camaro. I miss the days when a guy could walk the junkyard and find enough factory "upgrades" to play on the street and be competitive.

Remember when you grabbed a 8.75 rear end from the bone-yard from a 4 door b-body? Then pulled 3.91's from a '68 Truck at the bone-yard? And you got both for 50 bucks? You pulled the TQ and cast intake from a Maxi van for 20 bucks? Add a 125 dollar MP cam and 89 dollar Cyclone headers and you were a tough run in between stop lights or out of town at the marked off 1/4 (not 1/8 .. lol).

the rest of us try to stay ahead of a V6 Camry ... LOL
I like to think back to when I was riding a full custom Harley Davidson shovelhead show bike, it was fricking beautiful. I rode to a local restaurant for a beer and a steak sammich, and pulled beside some youngster on his crotch rocket, he looks my bike over and says " my bike would walk all over your bike" , I looked him up and down, looked at his bike and said " look at my bike compared to yours, who gives a ****?"

Never really been much of a street seen where I live, you see the odd muscle type car putting around.

when were those prices!??

maybe back in dickety-doo when you could get a GTS for $75 and swap out to a set of 3.91's in 45min that you got from big nose bobby, but you had to trade 'em back after the weekend or he'd make you take his sister big wendy on a date to the DQ and give him a pack of camel unfiltereds.

Our local small town junkyards in the late 80's, mid 90's that was the going prices.
I had a long time friend who owned the yard we all stomped all over when we were in school. There were no posted or spoken prices on anything, but he kept a big jar on the counter that had a sign taped to it that said "Donations". He'd just ask that you donated what you thought was a fair price. If you put something stupid int he jar, you were invited not to return. That's how he got out of payin taxes.

man, it's always been more expensive out here...
Not sure about that . I could ship my engine to Brian @ IMM there in CA and have quality work done for about the same price or less than what it costs here in Idaho . Which is exactly what I will do for my next engine build .
And I find better prices on many parts surfing FB and CL in CA .

Ya think, as Herb McCandless once asked me, have you ever considered moving? In my case it was the lack of quality machine work available in my area in 80's and 90's
Did you know Herb ? What a great guy ! Walked me through a W2 build over the phone in the 90s….
