at a recent car show there was a 69 Dart GT with a 340

he told me that he had the X heads on his car but there was no X visible

on the heads

what heads did the 69 340 come with from the factory?

is there any other way of telling what type of heads he had?

If you can not see the X next to the spark plug hole, then there not X heads. Same goes for any letter head. It's that simple. The heads casting numbers, otherwise, are located under the head in the middle between the runners where the exhaust port back into the manifold are.

'69's should be an X.

A friend had a set of 69 x heads. What was interesting was there was no x near the spark plug holes. There was however the correct 894 casting # and the x designation. Hope this helps.

Incorrect, the "X" can be seen next to the spark plug hole.

i've seen 894 heads without the X next to the spark plug hole. I was under the impression that all of the ones like this were early 68 heads, though.

X heads can lack the "X" next to the spark plug hole.

Only way to know is look at the casting number

I've also seen 894 heads without the X on top but it was underneath the intake runner Same with 915 J heads. Not sure why but you know how Ma Mopar was.

Yeah, I've seen X heads without the X near the plug and J heads the same way.

I just learned something. Thanks Guys.
