How to flush out a new build

I've had about a teaspoon worth of metal grit and shavings come out of a freshly machined block that is supposedly "100% clean, ready to go". I almost believed him and assembled it, but my OCD took over and I had to be sure. I'll never skip it, no matter what they say.

How to flush out a new build

First run cleaning taps through all the threaded holes. Then remove every plug, scrub every passage with Tide and hot water using a new engine brush kit. Rinse and repeat until the brushes come out clean. Then blow compressed air through all passages until no water comes out. I like to finish up...

    230 Block Question

Would take quite a bit of power to make any 400 fail IMO. I think any 400 block that has good cylinder walls is a keeper.

    230 Block Question

And here's an interesting document...they put 400s into some '71 Newports. Would be fun to find one of these, watch the puzzled looks from vin readers.

    230 Block Question

I've always heard blocks cast before Dec 11, 1971 are winter blocks with the thick webbing. That's no guarantee that it will sonic test well, though. Would hate to spend alot for one and find it has thin cylinder walls... I do have one tucked away that's been cleaned, mag'd and sonic tested...

    block identification concern

True, it could be some strange flange and bolt pattern.

    block identification concern

If you can buy it cheap like $100-150, get it for the crank and misc other parts. More than that, pass.

    What block is this?

Still a mystery why all the block casting number lists don't show it. Maybe it was one incomplete list, then everyone copied it.

    What block is this?

There were a few different casting numbers used on 400's. But that is strange that it's an 830 casting and a 400...every list I have saved shows that's only 440.

    470 dyno test article

I appreciate the work you put into your research, and that is one stout 470 for sure. Would love having an identical piece for my Barracuda.

    HP increase with cam

Your best improvement will be headers, but adding intake/carb/cam will really wake it up.

    HP increase with cam

'68 A body 383 was 300 hp, due to restrictive exhaust. Slightly more than '67 but still less than equivalent B body 383-4. Totally agree, love the Street Dominator on B and RB.

    75-76 400

516 heads have slightly smaller intake ports than later heads. But that may not be a bad thing, because it might help a little with better low speed torque from intake velocity, or it may not. But one thing you will gain is a slight bump in compression. I say go for it.

    What intake for 440?

Looks like the aftermarket picked it up - several Corvette parts suppliers have the entire assembly: Corvette Air Cleaner, Big Block, 1966-1972 | 64239 Same base, if you can see the bulges for the Holley bowls then that's it. Edit: Found a source for just the base...

    What intake for 440?

Don't cut your hood - get a GM air cleaner base part # 6422188. Been there, done that 25 years ago. Search for base for 1970 Corvette LT1 350/360hp, or any 396/375hp car. Several GM cars with a dual feed Holley had that base, and it is contoured to be Holley carb specific.

    What intake for 440?

I just posted a pic of my 440 with Holley SD intake, Holley 850 dp carb, and 14 x 4 (I wasn't remembering correctly, I had a 4" element as you can see in the pic) filter that fit under the flat hood of my Barracuda, and I explained what I used to achieve it. I also ran a nitrous plate under the...
