Other than staying away from the aluminum 833, 500/500 shouldn't be a problem. I stomped the crap out of a couple over the years with 600+HP BB's in B Bodies and didn't break em, I did however grenade a few clutches so don't forget the shatter shield unless you don't mind loosing some toes.:-D

I ran 18 spline units behind some serious horse (5-600) B Body BB's for years and abused the hell out them, didn't break even one. Clutches well that's a different story.:angry7:

That's exactly what I'm saying, the OD unit was not built to the numbers of the standard 833 and I know of 2 people right now looking for one (well one for sure) up here BTW, shipping cost sucks. B Body guys love them.

Put it in forth gear and turn the input shaft 1 turn and the output shaft should turn approx. 1 and 1/4 turns for an Overdrive. Then you'll know for sure.

If it actually is an overdrive 4 speed you could trade it here for a standard 833 plus pocket 2-300$

Are you talking about the 340 crank or 440 crank. Ask him for the casting number and we'll run it to determine it's age and cast or forged.

Ask your mechanic this, when he went to a shorter drive shaft (which you have to when going to an 8 3/4) where did he position the tranny slip yoke on the splines before taking the tranny yoke to pinion yoke centerline measurement. If you see his eyes get all wonky like he's thinking to hard or...

It's an 833 out of an E body, you can tell by the shifter bolting pad location. Terry

If you're doing 4 grand at 60, figureing a little converter slippage, I'm guessing that you've got 4.55 or 56 gears. If you're doing mostly highway driving and have 14" tires then I'd highly recommend 3.23 gears. You could purchase a center section (pumpkin) with 3.23 gears allready installed...

It could be that the nose of the tranny input shaft is binding in the pilot bushing (in the end of the crank) and then the input shaft doesn't stop turning when the clutch is disengaged. If you were running a 741 (small pinion shaft) rear with a 4 speed and sticky tires I would have serious concerns but not with the 742 or 489. My only advise is to go with a drive shaft loop, even if you are running it on the street mostly, just for piece of mind. They're a lot cheaper and...

I had that same package in a 69 super B and if no one has changed the tranny, for some obscure reason, it will be an 18 spline. I had the same 9 3/4 Dana but I did add dual 4's, headers and a wild cam. it was a hoot but the front drum brakes sucked. Terry
