Birth of a 1970 Dart Convertible

Here are some pictures. These parts are so much cleaner that when we started.... We didn't get rear window panels done so no primer yet, there is always tomorrow. We are gaining ground on this build. At least I think we are?

Does anybody know of any junk yard that mite have any convertibles in that might have this left side wheel house cap? I think that 67, 68, 69 cuda are the same. This part puts a hold on putting this back together.

What's wrong with yours? With all this metal work you are doing I would think you could fix any issues that might pop up.

This is truly mind-boggling. What an ambitious project! And I know from back issues, slow and steady wins the race, unless you wanna have a spasm while trying to wipe your *** and spend the next week crawling around on the floor on all fours. Remember to take some ibuprophen before you start and do some stretches (you could do worse than following this dude here but I add in some hand/arm stretches I picked up from wafer fab jobs too, basically this) before you get under the car, especially when it's cold out. People make fun of me when I'm out doing my old-folks-home routine in my coveralls but they've never known what it's like to not be able to tie your shoes after a day under the car. Remember, you're basically doing a warehouseman's job (lifting, twisting) except on your back or bent over a fenderwell.

Badass car, I recently got back into mopars after a long, long break and I covet a drop top A (and also a shop big enough to put a whole car into to work on! Oh man, how glorious). This project is majorly rad.

There was a picture earlier of a compound curve plus angled break stamped corner (the leftmost corner visible in the most recent pic) with two layers of rusted out shitmetal glued together with time and neglect. Drillin' out spot welds is one thing, fabbing up a piece like that that doesn't look out of place is quite another. Not that I doubt he could do it, jesus wept, look at this thing, but I understand the desire to buy the part instead of build it from scratch.

Well since I have this all a part it was a good time to reinforce the door strikers. I used 1/8" metal. I got to finish welding tomorrow.

You are doing an incredible job! If you need any specs from the factory 68 or 69 manual all you have to do is ask. Keep up the great work!!!!!

This is such a cool idea! Ma mopar never made a 70 vert,so you make your own! Hell YA! I like the idea A LOT!!

I want to say thanks to all the people that put their time and hard work into to this website without them, this build would not happen. THANK YOU....... Well after all of the prep fitting putting together and taking apart, the install has started. It seems good to start putting her back together.:cheers::cheers: The camera batteries were dead so no pictures, I hope to get pictures tomorrow.:eek:ops::eek:ops:
Jim

I had to buy new camera. My Kodak wouldn’t turn on, I think it got dropped. Anyway I got a couple pictures. The quarter panels are welded in and the window frames are just screwed in for now. If I got time tomorrow after work I will spend some time on it.
Jim

Wow,you sure have gut's taking on such a huge and kind of never been done thing! My wife has always been a big fan of the 66 convertible Valiant. You have me wishing my 70 was a convert now!

Well we got some work done today. I got caught working LOL... We installed the trunk lid and it didn't fit....:wack: so we put the 68 on and it fit but you guessed it, 10" too long. I measured it up and had to cut the slots 1/2" longer, and then it fit fine. Got all of the brackets welded in except the cross bar that the back of the rear seat and hyd. pump hooks. Then for $h1ts and giggles we put the top on. Well it is starting to look like a car again. :hello1::hello1:

Wonder if the 68 trunk hinges are different than the 70? As long as it all works is what matters...good progress!

Yes they are different. The pins that they hook too are closer together. I been cleaning up welds and started to cut apart torque boxes and see what kind of shape there are in. A shower and off to get taxes finished. :prayer:

Jim

Thanks for the complements

John! You are doing such a great work on your car. If this wqs back in 69 Chrysler would have let you build the 70 Dart convertible for them. You should be proud of your self.

Got the taxes done, of corse they want more blood.....................:prayer: When I got back, worked on those torque boxes and got 3 done. The front driver's side has a piece of tin spot welded in side of it. Does anybody know why this is?
Jim
