Well, since I've removed my bench seat and I'm installing some nice buckets, I thought I might want to switch to a floor mounted shifter too.

Probably NOT going with a console and stock shifter, so what kind of aftermarket shifter should I get,, what ones have you used and how do you like them.

Right now I'm looking at the B&M Quicksilver, Starshifter, and Sport shifter.
I've never used a ratcheting shifter and not sure I need it,,I kind of like the Starshifter for looks and it is dual mode, detent and ratchet. Or maybe the cheaper detent shifter like the sport shifter would be good enough cause my car will rarely see any time at the dragstrip.

Any recomendations ?

B&M quick silver is an excellent shifter for the money, my father in-law has one in a factory console in his duster. I personally don't care for ratchets, unless you have a manual valvebody in your trans. Nice looking 68 btw looks like a sleeper!

I have both the quicksilver and the mega shifter and personally I like the quicksilver so much that I picked up another one for my truck. What ever you do, do not cheap out and get the z gate shifter. That was the first one I installed in my dart and it was absolutely horrible.

I agree best shifter I ever used. Never liked b&m shifters. They and the cables always seemed cheap to me.

I've been running a Hurst Pro-matic II that I picked up at a swap meet for $50. Haven't had a bit of trouble out of it. Can't beat the quality.

im currently running the quick silver, but i have to admit i had a hurst promatic years ago that i liked more.

I have the B&M StarShifter in mine. The dual mode detent/ratchet feature is actually really nice but the only drawback is that you can only ratchet UP through the gears, not back down. But its nice when you want to do a little stoplight action or go to the track on rare occasions. I use it more than I probably should on the street ;) but as far as quality goes it feels really solid and not cheap and flimsy like the horrible Z-Gate. Its seen a few years now of almost daily driving and still works like brand new. Oh and I put a real 8-ball knob on it that I, ahem, "liberated" from a bar one night.

i got an 80s hurst v-matic that i got for 20 bucks. and i love it. i had a b&m sport shifter and i hated it. my buddy has a b&m zgate in his truck and its not bad. its better than the sport shifter imo. the thing i like about my vmatic is that it can ratchet or detent. i always ratchet it tho. i use b&m cables because i got them for free. and so far ive broken 2. now ive got a better cable

I run a hurst quarter stick in mine....and love it. I have another one, a pistol grip styled quarter stick.....still in the box, never ran it.LOL, all my other cars are 4speeds!!

that one looks cool

Thanks! I'm trying to find a different shift knob. Wanting something with some color, and of course needs to have a cool logo or a nakid chick or something!!

I'd put a grommet around the cable where it goes through the floorboard.

I use the B&M star shifter cant beat a 90 dollar shifter in all my cars.

SNAKE,

Love your car man and the bright white interior. I could never keep it clean though.

Anyway, I have another post that I'm not getting any replys on, but maybe you can help me.

When your sitting in the drivers seat of your dart, Is the steering wheel exactly right in front of you, or is the steering wheel kind of off to the right a little bit ?
If you could check that for me it would be a big help.

I'm mounting some late model bucket seats in my dart, and I move the seat to the left to where it fits the floor correctly, then the steering wheel is not centered with the seat.
Just want to get it in basically the same position as a factory seat.

Thanks
Scott

Mine is dead centered to me,what seats you got? are you sure your using the right holes, there are dimples in you floor pan were the factory mounted the buckets

Snake,
Thanks for checking on that for me.

I"m not using the factory holes because the seats I'm using arent even close to being where the factory holes would be.

I'm just having a small issue with where exactly to mount the drivers seat, mainly because the tracks on these seats are farther apart.

I've already cut the "humps" or raised sections out of the floor where the bench seat used to mount, and welded in flat metal in its place so I have a larger flat area to work with.
Its just on the drivers side, with the seat lined up with the steering wheel, the inside track is pretty close to the tunnel, but the mount is on the flat. It will just be a little more tricky to make the re-enforcing plates that I'm welding to the floor. The one will be partly flat and will go up the side of the tunnel a little.
Or I could mount the seat a little more towards the door, the steering wheel would be slightly offset but my inner track would be more on the flat, and my re-enforcing plate would be flat too.

Thanks for the input on that though, I'll post pics of the whole thing when its finished.
Heres a pic of one of the seats. They are from a 2005 Scion TC, quite comforable and good support.

i am now. one broke up by the trans. and the other the end somehow broke off.

Mile high,
I had the same problem and it turned out it wasnt a matter of the bases centerline in relation to the steering wheel it was a matter of actually leveling the seat out. It being out of level side to side made it look like it was off center. I ended up needing a 1/4" shim on both attachment points, on both seats next to the driveshaft tunnel.
Hope this helps.

B&M Quicksilver!!

It looks and functions beautifully. Most people don't know how to route the cable correctly and then they starting having problems. I humbly admit I went through one cable myself before figuring out that I was installing to close to the header, to much bend, etc.... The cable that came with the shifter was to short really so I bought a longer cable that work much better. Once I properly ran the cable I had no problems with it for years after that. Just saying take your time running the cable.

I love my quicksilver.
