If you have a cone type and if it wears out, can you just simply swap the cone, for the clutch? Or would you need a whole new tail housing to go with it?

How many splines, is a A-body rear axle?

Thanks much!!

Easy to swap. Put the clutch in and reset bearing preload/backlash. Use the correct bearings and races for the carrier.

I'll take all those worn out cones I can find. :)

I forgot what we were talkin about.

You only need to swap the ring gear on to the clutch sure grip unit. The pinion does not need to be touched.

If you are swapping the gears to a new case, then that's an entirely different deal.

Hi, I was just wondering what can be done with worn out cones ?
What would you do with them ?

I have a 489 _ 3.55 to 1 (cone as far as I know).
The stupid thing whines, tone varies with change in vehicle speed.

Thought about a clutch type if a centersection could be found cheap enough, that did not need repaired.

Is the crush-sleeve alternative (solid) availiable for the 489 ?

Some people machine the flat ends of the cone off so the tapered portions make contact again. They then put a shim of a similar thickness of what was machined off, between the cone and the springs, to maintain the tension. Not a precision endeavor. One could probably do it on a belt sander, and make the shim with tin snips and some scrap sheet metal.

Whine is more likely gears, not the sure grip assembly.

Machining the cones is how you fix that style sure grip with a hardened shim to take up the difference.

Yes, the crush sleeve eliminator is available for a 489 case.
