Pet Peaves in Mechanic's Lingo

WOW!! what a great thread to learn :D

Relay :toothy7: :D
I was working the counter at NAPA and a man walks in and asked
for a relay!! :banghead:
I told him to go back home and ask for one:violent1:
if his wife/Girlfriend was home :downtown:

I have said pvc before and let the Dizzy spelling help me.. :happy1:

3/4 cam
i had read early circle tracks were 3/4 mi.
a 3/4 cam was one ground to perform on those tracks.
but i don't know myself.

This is getting good! I'm learning things I never knew about rockerarm covers and havin' a few laughs along the way!

BTW, Thanks goes to whichever mod fixed the typo in the title doh! :banghead:

Valve covers do indeed cover the valve stems. Some cars don't have rockers just cams and buckets over the valve stems and springs. They are still valve covers, or cam covers, or cylinder head covers. Even the factories can't agree between different departments. What the service manual may call a cylinder head cover gasket, the parts catalog may call a rocker cover gasket. It's all the same.

But, yeah, calling a limited slip a posi does urk (or is it erk?) me. lol

Goodyear shop told me there would be an extra charge if the front end alignment they were going to do on my Cuda needed shims added. I told him it didn't need shims because it had cam bolts and he said "what's that?".:violent1::violent1::violent1:

mine is when people call a engine a " motor " a motor is electrical . show me in a factory service manual from any car brand that has a motor repair section.

it grinds my gears when ppl call "wheel covers" as hub caps.

Hub caps are the little ones ....A.K.A. dog dishes.....Hub caps cover ONLY the HUB area and leave some of the wheel exposed

Wheel covers....COVER the entire wheel.

if used correctly, the names of these parts make a lot of sense.

The other one is calling salvage yards as junkyards.

Salvage Yards are in existence to facilitate parting out of cars so that useful parts can be recycled into use on other cars of similar make and model

Junkyards house Junk ......junk= crap ...nothing useful.

if even one mopar is present in the yard then it is a Salvage yard
if a yard is full of Toyotas then its a JUNKYARD ......big difference

Rani has reminded me of this many times :banghead:

In MN everybody calls them "Junkyards" :D

What kind of motor mounts are you using on your Demon? LOL

Actually my old auto shop teacher taught this to us, he always said "motors are electric" so it has always stuck with me too.

Funny, I have heard of the 3/4 cam too, but never understood what that means....My dads 66 Cuda has a 273 and when dad was young he had a hotter cam installed, he always said it was a "3/4 racing cam" lol

Xs2 .....i try to always call engines ....engines ....not as electrical motors LOL

Although very strange that they are listed under "motor mounts" at Auto zone and O' reileys

I guess I don't let things bother me about what people call stuff. In my personal life I keep my hobby a secret just because I really don't care to bench race with people. Smile and wave, Fellas. Just smile and wave.

35 years ago I had a foreman make an issue out of the motor/engine thing.
But he was an electrician. And a nuckle head.

I looked up definitions and it seemed somewhat fluid, if you will pardon the term.
Fluid being the state some fuels are in.
Seems like nit picking to me.
But I'm a rebel of sorts at that kind of thing.

I really, really hate the terms "dizzy" & "carby".

"The momo in my car car has a dizzy and a carby"

Grow up already and speak like an adult!
....................that is unless you really are 3 years old.

Ever have someone come up to you and ask if you had a hemi in your car, and you said no, it's a 440. Then they reply, well I used to have a 340 hemi when I was younger. I usually just say "bye-bye" at that point.:sign3:

i prefer boneyard :burnout:

I don't let those things bother me,in fact i'm guilty of most of them [except the frame off thing on a unibody]. You must remember that half or more of the folks saying these offending things don't have a clue what they are talking about!!

These might be ya'll's Pet Peeves, but you're crackin' me the hell UP!!! You guys mentioned most of the good ones already. But I've heard women (and guys) say "listen, the engine's SKIPPING". I dunno, that one just drives me nuts because it's usually said in a very confident tone of voice.

*Oh yeah.....then there's the one......car won't idle but it'll rev out and pull hard to 6500 RPM......and they'll say "it's a fuel problem". LOL
