I have a Guy wanting to pay me in full for my Road Runner using PayPal.How safe is this?It is as safe as a bank wire transfer right?Once he sends the money and I withdraw it it is a done deal right? No way to for me to get the shafted right?

Thanks,Jim

Yes you can get screwed. If he disputs the transaction he might get all or part of his money back so be careful. It is one thing if you are talking parts but when you are talking a car you could end up losing a lot of money!! JMO

Sold a bike on EPay a few years back. Buyer wanted to PayPal me the money. Told him to give me a deposit and bring a wallet full of cash when he came to pick it up.

I wouldn't sign over a damn thing nor would the car leave my sight until I had every penny in cash in my hand.

Let me call my brother Ken on this Jim, he and another man sold many liquation
stuff for companies and has experience in these matters, I understand you concerns on this, I would be also.. Let me see if he is near a phone.

The problem is when the buyer has hijacked someone else's paypal account.

When the owner of the paypal account realizes the situation he gets his money back and then paypal gets its money back from you.

This may take a few weeks or even a month if the paypal owner doesn't realize what happened really quickly. In the end you have no money and no car.

And the person that has your car has resold it having never registered in his name.

Scamers love PayPal. A hacked credit card or PayPal account that the real owner has no clue about until the massive charges come in and then it all gets reversed leaving people that sold their item with absolutely nothing.

Not many people want to pay 3% on a $15K transaction.... $450.00. It could be a straight up deal but it is also likely it isn't.

Jim-I have had people want to pay me through pay pal,the problem I see is they can dispute the sale AFTER they have the car or other valuables in their possession. The best and still the safest is face to face-CASH.If someone is out to stiff you they have had lots of time to perfect their game. And when cash is involved always check the lines in the bills.Good luck!

PayPal is pretty damn safe. However, hacked accounts can certainly be a problem. He has to pick up the vehicle and get the title. I would tell him to bring cash when he picks it up. Safer all the way around. He has to spend the money either way, and PayPal will be charging fees for the service and fees to move the money to your normal bank. Cash has no fees and never bounces.

Small things no issue, I wouldn't sell a car that way. Too many variables, the internet for that much cash, not the safest way.

From what I have heard, if you accept paypal than cash out your paypal account and it turns out the transaction is a scam, the original account owner is protected and paypal will reimburse him and come after you. You think your safe because you emptied your PP account but they can freeze you bank assets or put a lien on your property. Thru the legal system you received stolen propery/money.

He wants to have the car picked up with a shipping co.Man I do not know what to do now doesn't sound to safe.

I would just tell him the car doesn't leave until you are seeing a handful of C notes. if they REALLY want it , they will make it happen. if not , someone else will snatch it up. that's my 2 cents worth. I would not take ANY chances if it were me, too many variables and scams out there

With the additional info it sounds pretty fishy. Ask for his phone number or if you can talk face to face. Most scammers won't do it. I've sold lots over Craigslist and run into scams like this a lot.

The reason he wants to send me PayPal is he is in the Military and out to sea right now.Now I got a email that the transport company only takes Western Union and he wants to send me $950.00 extra and then have me send the $950.00 to the transport company for him.Maybe I should ask if he could do a Bank wire transfer instead?Or send me a deposit Pay Pal and I will keep the car for him.

Jim

I would not do it. In God I trust, all others pay CASH.

The reality is that this is a transfer from his bank account why wont he do a deposit on pay-pal and then bring the remaining cash when picking up the car?
But in case you do and in case of dispute. I would also get a notarized bill of sale for you to keep as security.

I'd take a PayPal deposit of 10%, when the money is in your account,, immediately transfer that money out of the account. ( I only put money in that account when I buy something, otherwise it's empty, and paypal can't touch any other accounts).

Get the rest by money order,or similar, once you got all the cash, turn over the papers.. imho . . grant

don't walk.......RUN !!!!

This sounds like a scam to ME...be careful

NOW - it stinks like a scam. You will be responsible for that 950 on top of the rest he steals from you. Let his family/ wife etc take care of it. You get cash

i had done this in the past, buyer disputed payment 2 days later. try'd to say i sold a car with a cracked block. i called the buyer and told him i was on my way with his money and his *** whoopin. dispute was closed that day. he didnt want to give the car back, just didnt want to pay for it. i ended up screwed out of about 750 of the final deal.
