welding milodon sump. Mig or Tig?

I have to modify my sump to clear the steering rack and was wondering if welding it with my Mig will be ok or should i get it Tig welded?
The plan is to cut a 35mm band form the walls and lift the whole floor of the rear section up then use a section of the offcut to patch the hole. It will end up being approximately 1mm from the windage tray which i think i will have flatten it off slightly to get more clearance.
Can anyone see a problem with this?

If you are really good with your mig you could probably do an acceptable job , but a a tig would be so much better .
I would advise to have the sump bolted down to a flat surface (like the block ) to avoid warpage when welding .
Is it possable to raise the engine a little to reduce the amount you need to cut the sump .
 
If you have access to a tig, that would be my first choice.
The welds are always cleaner with a tig.
Mig would do the job, but you are asking for the best choice.

I agree Tig is the way to go. A few years back I was working on the roof of the Boston convention center it was all stainless steel. We had to Tig weld every seam for this very reason! They wanted to Mig the seams to speed up the job, but that process got shot down because of the potential of water leaking in.
 
Hell, LOL, I can remember when we use'ta braze/ gas weld this stuff

Mo-cars. K frame is Elko, as for raising the engine, i`m struggling for clearance on the firewall so i need keep it as low as possible.

Hey Shags, had to go through a similar process mate. I have the same rack and pinion setup with a 5.7 Hemi. I ended up chopping 'x' amount out in order to get 10mm clearance between the top of the rack and the sump. Just be careful not to cut too much out as the crank sits quite low in the pan already.

Boony, that looks like a Mig job? I thought about notching it like that but decided on this.

Yeah mate i think it is, I didn't do the job, had a welder do it for me. Your idea is probably better in hindsight. May change it yet, see how it goes.

you will need need these parts also,
pick up #18331
indicator and tube #22064
oil pick up support stud#6506333-AA
oil stud nut#6502756
bearing cap bolt#6506272-AA
You can reuse the original windage tray with slight modification(or milodon have one) and you have to shorten the pan bolts too(or buy new ones from milodon).
