more like retards .....went in today to get some parts ..the guy told me the thing differant from a swinger and a demon is that the swinger came with a polroid camera when you bought and that the slant six was the worst engine ever built because it was the first all aluminum engine and it 'could not be modified at all and that chrysler recalled all but a few of them and replaced them with 318's ...and he was dead serious :sign3::banghead::violent1:

So will the dealership still replace my 225 with a 318? (I'm guessing he was a cheby guy) Im usually the one explaining to people in line in front of me what part (and brand) they are looking for and how to fix there problem. That leaves the guys behind the counter blank stairs and jaws dropped.

I guess all the young Honda dudes listen to him in solemn silence to the "history lesson"......LOL

how the hell do these people get hired? he kept telling me how wrong I was in the parts i was looking for because "Darts don't have that" ....no his crappy Ford Ranger with hand painted racing stripes was in the parking lot lol

tell me where this guy works... i would love to drive up and ask for some slant parts!

typical ......for some reason they hire only ppl who dont know about cars.

here where i am they only hire ppl who can speak spainish.

i applied to work at advanced and they called me in and in the interview the guy said he called me bcoz i am multilingual..... but when he found out that among the langauges i speak i do NOT know spainish ...he told me i know the wrong langauges......then went on to tell me that im over qualified for the parts counter bcoz i have a Masters Degree....which i think is BS.:protest:

I tired to get a job at AutoZone last year. They told me they would rather hire someone that has good customer service than someone that knows cars. Really? Yea because car guys don't know how to talk to people. I didn't get the job believe it or not.

..............and the more computerized it gets the worse it is, which should be the opposite, as no one has to print hundreds or thousands of paper catalogs.

When I was in this business, "we" had a reputation for "getting anything." We hoarded old catalogs. I left around 83? but we had parts books back into the 30's and sometimes older.

Here's a true story. Nice tall cowboy of a customer I knew back then only pretty much used OLD trucks. I think the newest vehicle he had was about a 40. So he comes in one day, and gets "Nick" the old guy who'd been with the company since year 2---1932.

'Hey Nick how are ya," He booms. "Say, I don' spose you can get me a ring and pinion fer my ol' Model A?" (Model A? AA? Ford truck, flatbed)

Nick plays it cool. "Oh, I think we STOCK those!!!!"

Now I knew we had a Model A ring and pinion, on a bottom shelf, about 1" of dust, in a great big black and orange Timken box, probly been there since 1932, anyhow.

So Nick goes back, plays it cool, dusts that box all off, brings it up front and proudly dumps it on the counter. "Sure, we have that in stock," 'says.

Well of course we DON'T have it in stock, not really. It was there for years, and we never intend to REstock it, either, but the customer, now, he's thinkin' anytime I need a fender, a door, gears in the transmission, why these here guys........................

I believe it. AutoZone can't get the part right when they have the old part laying on the counter. I hate ours and will only go there for something like a quart of oil even though it is about a 1/2 mile closer than the next parts house.

That is just like some of the bs that our Autozone people would come up with. Friggen Idiots.

I just so happen to be one of those Autozone idiots. :wack:

Let me be the one on that sits behind that counter chime in here.

Parts store are NOT what they used to be...

I do agree that some of you are correct, and that there are more people in parts stores that don't know what they are talking about than there are that do....

BUT with that said, don't blame the people.. Blame the company for hiring people like that. I happen to know what I am talking about when it comes to most things.. (I am no expert on every car made, and neither is anyone else) but there are alot of things I don't know.

Then again at that, I am not the one to go around gloating that I know everything and that everyone on this forum is wrong and doesn't know a thing about a swinger or demon.

Just know who to talk to when you go to your local parts store ( whether it's Autozone, Oreally's, Napa, or any of the other stores.

You OBVIOUSLY talk to the wrong people in the store.

What store do you go to? I would LOVE to call their regional manager and let him know. :)

i did three years hard time at advance auto .. this was after 25 yrs in real parts depts. they hire young, uninformed kids because they work cheap and will follow the rules no matter how stupid the rules are. they trained us under no circumstances were we to count back change. only give back what the computer tells you....thats just one of many, many idiocies....

I used to shop with our local oriellys because this one guy behind the counter actually knew what he was talking about and learned the returning customers names. He was fired a year ago and I really haven't been back since.

Oh and I had one guy tell me that there is no way an HEI would work on my /6. I was like hmmm "that's odd because its parked right outside" but wouldn't come out to be proven wrong.

If they know how to use a computer, they are hired. I had done a retro fit of disks on an earlier drum brake Valiant. Went in to get the pads and the counter guy only wanted to know the year and make of the car they were going on. He pissed me off and so I told him a 1963 Plymouth Valiant. He never even blinked and punched it in the computer and TA DA he said to me: " I don't show disc brakes on this car." DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

I actually worked at AZ for 10 years, store manager, district manager and regional trainer. I was also a store manager for CQ and currently run a Hub store for Oreilly.

They ALL have there challenges as far as staffing. there are good stores with managers who can and do recruit good people and others that just cant. But what I don't understand is we all have computers and supposedly the knowledge of these not so common cars. They also have an online parts catalog that we can look up our own parts, check stock, and price. But we continue to complain about how stupid these guys are that are just trying to help you. It really doesn't require a ton of knowledge to take care of 99% of the people who come in. I look up and get the parts numbers that I need write them down and give it to the counter guy.
Do you know why they look for customer service over part knowledge. I can teach one, the other is a gift. When you deal with stupid people all day. It is hard to keep good people under those circumstances.

Instead of telling the guy you did a retrofit why not tell him what the retrofit was? They are not mind readers I doubt he was alive when that car was built or has a lot of dealings with them even if it were a 70 let alone a 63 to know if it could have disc brakes or not. He is going by what you said then you get angry and the whole situation degrades from there. That is exactly why customer service is more important. Just saying, take it for what it's worth.

They deal with enough people who do not even know the brand of car they drive, tweeked out, drunk, don't speak English, thieves, etc etc etc. Hell they are just trying to make a living and put food on the table, Like you. I assure they aren't paid well.
