Why are these cracked #2 cylinder blocks always finding there way to me?
Back last October I posted (Bad week at the Homestead) that I found out my 30 overbore 318 had developed a cracked cylinder after trying to flush the coolant and hook up the heater. My friend found me a 69 318 that a friend of his was removing from his 70 Challenger convertible (sweet ride by the way) and even had a video of it running. It seemed to run very well. I bought the engine but unfortunately because of the brutal winter up here didn't get around to swapping out the heads ( I WAS going to swap the heads for my 302's) until today. Once I removed the heads I gave the bores an inspection and found the #2 cylinder has a crack halfway down the cylinder. Although it MAY not be sucking water in I am not gonna chance it. I called my friend and he is gonna talk to the guy he bought it from.
I have a line on yet another engine but will surely be yanking the heads prior to purchasing.

X3...sleeves work very well unless you can get a whole shortblock for cheaper than the machining cost.

x2. If it was a good runner and not filled with water that froze - I have to believe it's not a crack. I'd have it checked before you count it out.

Although I can't 100 percent say for sure, it sure looks like a crack. you can see where the rings lose contact with the cylinder just below the crack. No idea why it wasn't taking on water unless there was no water in the system. The video of it running was only about 45 seconds long. Not enough time to overheat. Bottom line is it is not being installed. Back to step one.:banghead:

It's always a crap shoot when you are buying a used block but 318's are a dime a dozen
Look around probably pick one up from someone who did a motor swap.

:worthles:

Find a 5.2 magnum, they should be all over the junkyards. It's a bolt in and a much better motor.

Bolts in place yes, but there are changes that have to be made...intake, front cover, fuel pump eccentric or cam swap, distributor, 360LA oil pan, correct pickup...

Yep.... A cool idea,for a swap.

He can rob most of the parts from his old 318, the cam will need the pump adapter, a oil pan and the intake needs to be replaced. He'll have more compression and a great little roller motor.
