What's going on out here in the world????? We've been looking for a nice used truck for my son to buy and I went to the dodge dealership today they have a super clean 2004 dodge crew cab with 168,000 miles on it and thought I could work out a deal (I've spent upwards of $200,000 at this dealership) the truck has a 5.7 in it,4 wheel drive and they SLT trim package,so I came home ran the numbers thru Kelly blue book and came out to $7500.00 to a private seller,$5700.00 trade in value and thought this will be a slam dunk !!!!! HA HA WRONG-I took $7000,00 cash down and put it on the salesman's desk,He said I'll be right back (talking to the sales manager) he comes back hands me the money and said they can't let it go for under $8700.00 !!!!!!!! I walked out dumb founded and kinda shocked !! they were asking $8900.00 for it so I thought no problem,I must be living on the moon or in outer space,So I went to another dodge dealership in another town,They had the SAME truck with 158,000 miles on it for $14,600.00 I didn't even walk in. Did I miss something that happened in the used truck market in the last year??????? Thanks Steve

Nope, a lot of used car salesmen smoke crack!

Did they have Barrett Jackson on in the waiting room by chance? :D

Trucks are over priced period. I have owned five in the last seven years. I got on craigslist to get a newer one to tow my dart and apparently they are all made of pure gold now.

It is called "Cash for Clunkers". That took a bunch of trucks out of the market so now the supply is much thinner than normal so they are bringing premium prices.

Yea and my son has chased the "craigslist" thing for the past month and found nothing but JUNK,He has looked at dozens of trucks and even private sellers are asking some damm high prices--Steve

Does anyone think my $7000.00 offer was unfair???? like I said I thought it was a slam dunk but well I should stop thinking or at least they could have come back at $7500 ????? I probably would have bought it but to drop $200.00 ???? I thought screw you guy's,You know they probably gave the guy $5000.00 for it IF that--Steve

Every vehicle I have owned came off Craigslist...besides my dart which came from the news paper. I don't know if I am good at weeding out the nuts but unless I get a brand new car it's going to come from Craigslist. I think in my area trucks are priced so high because of the winter we just came out of.

I sold 2 crew cab one ton trucks in the past year. One we bought for $1800 and used for five years sold for $2400 needing a full set of 6 tires. The other showed up at the auction when a neighbor died, $1300 with 6 new tires, 200k miles, used it for 2 years and sold it for $2600. These were 90 and 91 duallys.

Come to Florida

Trucks are terribly expensive for no apparent reason imo. Another thing to take into account, they could have had a lot in the truck to take it off of the previous owners hands in order to get them into a new car or something.

Pick up trucks are always like that, I guess they must factor in that its a commercial vehicle and you can use it to make money. It took me one year to find a pick up worth the time of day, had to drive an hour out of the city to find it, didn't care how far I had to drive at that point because everything local was complete trash or way over priced.

I've seen the same thing around here. People asking $10,000-15,000 for an 8-10 year old 4x4 Ram, all with over 100k on the clock. It's been expensive down here for at least a few years now. I've been looking to upgrade from my 99 Durango but I'll wait for a deal....might be waiting for a while.

In the old days, it used to get you a better deal to pay cash, when the financing was out sourced. Now that they have their own financial companies, they want you to finance, cause they make a lot more money on the deal.

You could always buy a clean 94-02 dodge truck needing an engine for $1-$2k. Put a magnum crate engine in it and have something that will out run that new Hemi and still be a comfortable truck. My two cents.

Dealers suck unless you're buying new. Then you just pit them all against one another and see who survives! Lots of good deals on used trucks in the south. Every redneck has one, Including me!

my opinion, dealerships are CROOKS, price of vehicles, new, used, shop repair prices!!!! around here 2 wd are worthless, banks won't loan on older vehicles, etc. 2 years ago, I had 91 dodge 3/4 ton, 360, ran perfect, 125,000 actual miles, needed nothing, little dented up, not a SHOW truck, took 6 months to get $1600 for it, had 2 lookers! LOL
like he said go get solid 94-02 truck and put in a new motor! or find pre 94 cummins truck that has a decent body, ( ya can't wear out the motor!).. just me..

Honestly sounds low to me, at least in the Chicago area. A 4x4
Quad with a hemi that is in good condition for its age will go for close to 10k. Remember the new ones are what 50k ???

Last night I helped a fellow prepare an offer on an 04 Hummer. Same deal. In ten years the goofy thing had only depreciated 20% according to NADA guides.

8,700 for an 04' is good. I know the miles are a concern, but around here a clean 95-97' 360 four wheel drive will bring 5,000 all day. They don't go down unless they are toast. I sold my 97' cummins 2500 for 11,500, and I had a waiting list. I now buy new, haggle down to the lowest, and buy it. I bought my 12' 3500 Cummins 4x4 for 38,000, it listed for 50k. Around here that truck would bring used close to 38k with 14k miles on it. it seems strange, but that is the way it is. My Brother recently bought a new 14', and sold his 06 3500 Cummins with 80k on it for 4,000 less than he paid for it eight years ago. That is $500 a year depreciation. Fords and chevys don't see that value out of their Diesels.

I looked at 7 or 8 Rams at various dealers before I bought my '05 Quad 1500 4wd with 111K miles on the last day of Sept. last year. I feel end of month dealers are more in the dealing mood. Still, I could not believe the prices they wanted.

Before you buy you might check this.....................

Here's my NADA today probably add another 20% retail..........
