Looking for 273 piston and ring options

The greatest wear is the top 3/4" of the bore or so.

The best place to measure your bores for wear is in mid/center stroke.

When the piston is at mid-stroke, the crank angle is 90°. When the crank is at 90° you have the maximum side force on the piston, therefore that is the spot that should get the most wear.

I wold at least check the top, middle, and bottom of the stroke in the bore as a minimum to evaluate the bore wear...

Also parallel and perpendicular to the crank centerline and at 45° angles, for each level that you check.

Well said Karl I should have continued explaining. I measured mine 3 places. You also need to be careful not to go below the piston travel at the bottom of the bore. It sounds like the op already has a .030 engine. Answering questions online can be tough when I assume some information.

You know Pishta thats what I thought about the difference between the 273 and the 318 because right now I have a 318 in the barracuda which is going to go into the scamp, but last year I was at a show and some guy came up to me and asked what was under the hood I told him it was a 273 and he came right back and said nope it was a 318 even though it had the 66 273 intake, water pump, valve covers, and all the brackets and stuff from the 273 on it he still knew that it was a 318. Any how this 273 was sitting in the garage and now it is going back into the barracuda.

I spent 400 on my 4bbl slugs. 273 is not cheap to rebuild. EGGE

Yes, good point Mike. You need to measure the wear where the piston travels.

All has been checked and I have decided to go with a new set of .030 over Kanter's. John did the measuring Karl and called me today and said to go with the .030 I should have them by next week and John said once he has the pistons he will send in the block to be bored. Once this 273 is together then I can get it put back into the Barracuda and get the 318 that is in it now into the Scamp. Thanks for all your help everyone.

The Easter Bunny came to my house a couple of days early this year and this is what I found in my basket. Now I can get the block bored, and soon get this 66 273 back in the Barracuda. can't wait.

Those look great!!

They should run nice. :prayer:

Let John do the valve job also. He's great with heads... (He gives good head - LOL!) :D

My oldest son is going to Detroit tomorrow to spend Easter with the grandparents. He plans to stay a while and help John in the garage if he can keep him busy. Maybe you guys will bump into each other if things go well... :D

My son likes to help John and learn from him. He usually stays until John's "warden" calls him in from the garage for the night....

I was visiting with John today when his "warden" called him in so I had to leave. I know what you are talking about.

However, John is such a nice guy and easy to talk with, I've intended to just stop by quick before a 5 hour road trip and ended up staying a couple of hours getting caught up with him. I like to talk with him, I learn alot, he really knows engines of all kinds. It's cool to see what projects that he's working on for others when I stop by. It's easy to get talking with him and then find out that an hour or two have passed by. :glasses8:

The "warden" may be a good thing to keep his time on track.... :evil3:

Yep I know what you mean. I dropped off those pistons to him yesterday, spent two hours in the garage "which felt like 15 minutes" with him looking at all the engines and parts that he has and listening to the stories behind them. He really likes to talk about all the different motors and heads and I love to listen to him. While I was there the "warden" came out in the garage and told him how much time he had left to spend out there, and when it got close to the time she called him on the phone and told him time was up. We got to talking about some of his air plane trips and some of his friends and then I left. I will go back when I have all of the rest of the parts and this 273 is ready to go together. You are right, John's a hell of a nice guy and very knowledgeable, thanks for letting me in on one of your best secrets .
