Looking for 273 piston and ring options

I am finally going to get this 66 273 motor off the stand and back in the barracuda. It is not going to be a race motor, I want it back close to stock with a 2 bbl carb and be able to burn unleaded regular in it. My racing days are over and I just want to be able to go for a nice little drive with this car and be able to hear the radio for once. Right now I am looking for some options on some .040 over pistons and rings. If anybody has a set they want to sell or if you can turn me in the right direction as to where to find these parts please chime in. I am looking for gasket info also. All help appreciated.

hi, try EGGE, they have parts for older engines. 866 996 EGGE. located in calif.
 
I used Egge Pistons and rings in my 273. I used the 4 barrel pistons #L2222 and with a little head milling and a .035 head gasket I ended up with pump gas friendly 9.6:1. There have been quite a few guys here that have used the high compression pistons and haven't had any pinging problems with pump gas. Here's their link. Download the catalog and the 273 parts are on page 113. I see Egge is 100 years old this year. They do it right! tmm

Great pics Mike. You wouldn't have a pic similar to your last one, only using the original, stock 4bbl pistons? I'm curious to see how much more above the deck the originals were as opposed to the current EGGE offerings ( orig.pistons had a different pin height, correct?)
 
Here's the closest I can come up with. I should have tool more shots. I just found another shot on another thread here on FABO. I don't know fore sure but I would imagine the pin height is different between the oem's and the Egge's. It would be interesting to have some one measure the compression on a virgin HP 273. There have been many threads about this here but I don't recall anyone measuring a unmolested engine. Mopar claimed 10.5:1 but how close to that figure was it really.

I have a set of old, used original 4bbl pistons on rods here, but no block to install them in. I could try and figure a way to measure the pin height on these.
 
Kanter is where I got the replacement piston for my hi-po 273. They were in stock & ready to go! They have both 2bbl pistons & 4bbl pistons. They are also Teflon coated skirts. Also have a little higher deck hight than the eggies. Only reason I didn't go with the eggies was couldn't give a date for when they would have pistons. There tough too,trust me i can,do & will beat on my 273 every time it leaves the garage! Even had a home brew exhaust cross over blocker plate get into the combustion chamber didn't hurt anything! Just my 2€.

I did like the look of those Kanter pistons you posted. I got the Egge's because I couldn't find much else. tmm
 
I was looking on the Kanter site just now, they list 273 2bbl and 273 4bbl pistons, what would be the difference in the two pistons? Mine is a 2 bbl motor so how would 4 bbl pistons affect my motor?

Got these on ebay for my Hipo 273 from Falcon spares ,these are 40 up but never had a chance to fit them as i have the 318 in the car ! Will probley build that little LA down the track.

Higher compression. If you have a stock cam, the 4 barrell cam is a bit bigger as well as the 4 barrel carb/ intake and hotter spark with the dual point distributor. If you use higher compression pistons you may be able to jet the 2 barrel carb bigger so it runs rich enough not to ping. tmm
 
Every thing in here is going to be pretty much stock Mike, the whole idea was to be able to go up to the local station and fill er up with unleaded regular. So if I do go this route I guess I would be better off going with the 2bbl pistons then.

The 273 heads are very efficient. Pump gas friendly isn't a issue with 273's but I would hate to see you put 4 barrel pistons in and have problems. Maybe some one that has used that combination will chime in. tmm
 
I was a bit disappointed when I checked my compression and only got 9.6:1 but while talking here with other guys that have built many engines, a half a point won't do much for you horsepower wise.
 
I found a set on amazon they are cast EGGE's #2221 .040 over 2 bbl pistons says they come complete with wrist pins & retaining rings they go for $385.20 + $29.00 S&H for a total of $414.20 is this a reasonable price?

That sounds about right but take your time and shop around. What does your machine shop say? I wouldn't jump into a +.040 piston unless I need one. If a .020 or .030 overbore will clean up the wear you don't need to go bigger.
 
Thanks Mike I will check with John tomorrow on the over size bore to make sure he wants .040 I checked on the Kanter site just now and they have them listed for $369.04 with free shipping but they do not have any place that I can specify .040 over so I will have to give them a call tomorrow.

$400 yikes for some 273 pistons? There are complete 273's in here that are cheaper, but I get it if you are going 100% rebuilt. 4bbl pistons stick out of the hole, 2bbl pistons are deep in there. Look at a 67 2bbl 318 compared to a 65 273-4, you will be suprised how close they are. And if you replace the 273 block with a 318, no one will know but you....

ok, 235/273 piston, has c.d of 1.770 + dome hgt of .150 dome has to be +.129 out of block
with 57.3 cc head, comes to 10.54 cr. the 180/273 piston sits -.011 down, with 57.3 cc head, has 9.1 cr.

And if you find a 72 or newer 318 they are rated at 150 hp. And 260 ft.lb. of torque.
 
400 bucks is about rite,I didn't like the price eather but not very many places make them any more & most do under estimate the little 273 & swap in a 318.
