What's the deal with the Poly 318

That edelbrock company has corrupted a lot of young minds in its day. Along with some ill advised magazine articles.
Now my 67' sweptline has the stock la 318 that runs pretty strong for stock. but those old poly heads seem to have more of the more when stomping on the gas
 
Yea baby! It has been modified for larger butterfly carbs destined for a stroker poly. Looking at 400+ cubes. Now the hard part, not finding a turd poly to work with. All in time.....

v800 was the factory dual quad 57-58 318 poly actually what Christine would have had in the movie. The biggest detune I ever done was pull the 318 poly out of my 66' sweptline and replace it with a la 318 with the edelbrock performer package never had the slap your head off the backglass burnin tire torque the old stock poly did.

The only reason I pulled the poly was it would smoke a little on start up and I wanted to preserve it so it is still in the storage unit. and the warmed over la 318 is still in use in a 78' short box 4x4.

Negative. Christine was a 1958 Golden Commando. That was a one year only, one engine only option. It was the then new for 1958 Golden Commando 350 cube low deck B engine. First of its kind.
 
oh ok I was thinking the 59 fury up in the yard has a golden commando. will have to run up there tomorrow and look. But it is probably a 361 single 4bbl motor.

dang now I gotta go watch the movie again didn't remember it being a big block car
 
R.R.R.& Rumble..( you guys both go by Robert, lol..) nice information, on multiple carb intakes. A friend got a Poly 318 powered truck,in a trade.. Stock setup,remember the clack of solids,& immediate throttle response.( stock rebuilt..)
 
I haven't found anything off the shelf to fit that carb spacing. I will have to make my own from a pair of air cleaners later. A little cut and fit.

oem ones are plenty rare and pricey. I used to seem them occasionally back in the 90's when I went to Nats and Carlisle, back when some folks had some real rare parts to hawk, not used steering pumps, and alternators!! ha
 
Unfortunately, lots of people voice opinions without knowledge or experience. The Poly engines and early Hemi's are very similar to our over designed LA and big block engines. Not really any weaknesses, other than stated above, lack of High Performance parts and being overshadowed by newer engines. They were never offered in an "A" body. I had one in a push button automatic 64 Dodge Polara and loved it. All Chrysler based engines were way ahead of the competition in design and durability.

They were never offered in an A body but I am building a Early A 66 Plymouth valiant gasser right now and am going to use the Poly engine in it to turn some heads.

That is going to be a TIGHT squeeze, especially in and early A. There is a reason Chrysler went to the LA when the A body got a V-8

Christine was a '58,in the book and in the movie, even tho' Carpenter mis-
spoke in an interview and said '57 about her. RRR is 100% correct that was the 350"
2x4 B engine,you can even see the callout on the valve cover in the movie.The 318"
Poly 2x4 was also available in '58,and was in '57 as well.Mopar Action has a great
article on the resto of an orig. movie car,great story and details,and a scary incident!
The 350" dual four was called a Golden commando the same as the later 361"
single four engines, as RRR said,it was a one time one year package.The 318" dual four
engines were called the "Dual Fury" option. The hi-output 4bbl engines were called the
"Power Pack" option, of course the G Commando was the top single four eng. '59& up.

It will be a little work to make it fit but I have a 66 valiant with a 540 predator headed mopar in it and I know it can be done. I will post pictures of the progress and build on here soon.

A fellow at the Garlits show was dicussing this (maybe Mr. Wolfe) there is a bounty out for making X amount of power from a Poly! Google it I am sure there is plenty out there that I just do not remember!

I think Roland Osborn is the person you're thinking of !! A lot of development is going into the Poly Motors !! DARE TO BE DIFFERENT !!

Kool!! back in the day a guy around here had one in a 1970 duster 4spd. Plenty of people saw the taillights going past them!!
 
Putting the water jacket issue aside why wouldn't I run these on a 360 block in my FED. I run with out water. I came over to Mopar from Ford Cleveland and I think the biggest disappointment with the LA is the heads. Are poly heads the answer?

Putting an issue aside as if they were a bolt in and go, I would have to go with weight.
Making the most of the available stock or ported head flow is the biggest key in power production. The poly head idea is excellent but this particular head may not flow the best or be ported out as well as the current available after market heads will flow.

There is a fella on the sister site, FBBO, that has taken a lot of time on poly heads to come up with something really nice. Not for the average guy kind of stuff. Milled rocker stands, he took molds of the chamber for custom pistons, etc....

Poor Chevrolet, between the 340 and 351 Cleveland, they didn't have a chance. The poly heads, in stock form, flow just below late 360 heads in intake flow and way behind X or J heads, about 30 to 40 cfm less. They flow better on the exhaust side than either. Ported potential, I don't know. I have always liked Poly engines.
