With all the talk of "self driving cars" "Hands free driving" being the norm in a number of years I am thinking , What's the point?
Is it just me or does this sound dangerous? I like to drive and enjoy the road on a Sunday, or any day as most of us here do. If traffic and being to nervous behind the wheel is a problem for some people then isn't Public transportation an option? Let someone else drive for you, like a bus driver/taxi whatever. Isn't this technology actually taking the purpose of public transportation away. Drivers who don't want to drive....why buy a car, why be on the road, why be a hazard for the rest of us who do like to drive and enjoy it?
I am uneasy in regards to this technology. I am seeing issues with the Ford cars that park themselves for you. When dirt/ snow cover the sensors an accident can and does happen. People are blaming the car.....but it is the "driver" who is responsible, the driver who is technically behind the wheel and responsible for the direction of the vehicle in the end.
Yes, this is real and an issue for insurance companies and owners of these cars as the fight is on when a misshape occurs.
Thoughts from the masses here on FABO...curious :) Other reasons Yay or Nay?

I can see a whole new direction for bottom feeder lawyers to take. But look at all the texting you could do without having to pay attention to driving!

Heck now you can drive drunk. Legally. Cause you ain't drivin.

Why should we have to buy car insurance then if we are not in control of the car???

The scary thing is there are going to be some accidents that can't be avoided... The computer program decides who dies in that case...

I would rather be in control of my own destiny, not be at the mercy of a program.....

I'm split on this one. While the idea of self driving is nice because no more waiting. No sitting at forever red lights. The cars all talk to each other, merge seamlessly, all traffic just runs smooth. Would cut your commute in half. Less accidents. Don't have to worry about every other idiot out there who writes off a car every year.

At the same time. I love the sensation of driving. Always have. I started driving when I was 3. And have always enjoyed it.

It'd be great for long hauls (pretty much anything over an hour) - nap, work, talk, watch the sights
Could be great for urban driving, if they can get the cooperative stuff working to pack traffic in and optimize the flow
Probably going to be some ugly teething pains, though

I have my doubts that it will ever happen. Might be ok in california where roads and sensors don't get covered in snow, slush, salt and whatnot. Canada? Ha. Oh but you have to clean the snow off your sensors before you start out. Well, we have idiots who don't bother cleaning snow off their windows now and you expect them to clean sensors?
Liability will be an issue too. Why should I insure it for liability if I am not in control? Then who is sued when it hits someone? The manufacturer? Me?

I see a whole new target market. The Amish!

I wouldn't mind slipping mine into self driving mode late at night on I95.

I don't think it will ever become the norm but I do think it will become more common. Plus, there are so many idiots on the road today that I wouldn't mind having extra protection against bad drivers. I'm afraid that one of these days I'll be out cruising in my Dart and some idiot that's texting, or a drunk driver, will rear end me.

I but all the lawyer firms are starting to lick their chops....... with the onslaught of frivolous lawsuits on the way.......

Well, they poo-pooed the car back in the horse and buggy days. I like technological advances and I would love to turn on the auto pilot on a cross country drive. I would also feel safer facing a computer driven car than many maniacs out there now. I would still self-drive my MOPARs!

People are becoming so dumb that they wont be able to pay attention long enough to operate a vehicle. Theres a multitude of ecuses also, ADD , ADHD. People are also medicated to the point of DUI/prescription drugs. People are on all kinds of mental health drugs because they generally aren't happy. Not to mention being medicated for actual physical pain and illness.

from my point of view, self driving cars are going to be here soon. Im worried the "law" will outlaw any car that is not self driving!

I don't think so, not for many years anyway. It would take a while to get everyone "converted over" to a self driving car. What they need to do is test it in the form of public transportation for a few years. A self driving bus, or taxi service. See what it does in crowded city traffic before pushing onto the masses. The closest thing I have ever experienced was the self driving train at Atlanta airport, its pretty neat, but its on rails. I remember being freaked out for a second when you think that there is no one behind the wheel.

My new truck puts on the brakes by itself it it thinks you are coming up too fast to the car in front! flashes red LED on the windshield, seat vibrates and it slams on the brakes! I turned that OFF! So they are getting "us" use to the idea of "self driving"

Does this mean people with self driving car would no longer be charged for a DUI?

While it would be a good idea for the numerous idiots i see on my way to and from work most days (really texting while on a motorcycle in rush hour traffic on a highway)
I cant see it being widespread. How would the government make up the money they would lose on traffic fine revenues

I can see it happening only on interstates or similar controlled access roads, if at all. What if a computer drives the car into a pedestrian while it's preventing let's say a head-on collision?

Just making the kids lazy & they don't have to pay attention & learn how to drive

It would sure be a help in a construction zone that says right lane closed 2 miles ahead by getting over and not racing up just to cut off everyone and bring traffic to a stop.
