1969 Dart Street/Strip (Re)Build

-
Well fellas. Sad to say the Dart was in a wreck tonight. Got rear ended and she's going to need some body shop attention. Not too bad of damage but it sucks.

I haven't really looked at the car since Friday do have really documented much. Here's what it did look like a couple weeks ago at the track. Man that really was a nice original bumper that I bought from member jefflock here in KS.

Had to be a Mustang too. Can't really tell much in these pics but the bumper brackets feel like they were about to come through the bumper as sharp as outward protrusions feel. The trunk structure is pushed forward and up so the trunk sits above the quarters now. Trunk lid lip is bent forward. A chunk of paint got chipped off the body where the front of the trunk lid collided into it. Not terrible but bad enough. I could have just lived with the bumper damage but it got the body so more than likely by the time it's all said and, the whole car will be repainted. Dropping it off at the body shop tomorrow.

Terrible. Hope insurance gets it fixed up.
I may not have caught it, but did he have ins. ? sue his *** if he didn`t ! dam ford was probly trying to keep up w/ u, if he wasn`t talking on a cell phone , or lighting a weed.

I can't seem to get ahead. I had a friend over and we were looking at the rear tires running on jack stands. There was an obvious wobbling issue as can seen in the video. It appeared that the wheel is not centered on the axle. You can barely see the center opening around the axle also has the off center wobble. So he asks if the lug nuts are tight on the shanks? I check and no they aren't. They are tight on my weld wheels and the wheels turn true. But the street wheels have a bad wobble and the shanks are loose. I call Billet Specialties and they claim to have never heard of this problem before. So now I'm understanding some of the shaking and grab-slip-grab-slip-grab-slip problems I've felt launching at the track with the radials. So BS didn't have an answer for me and I'm on my own now to figure this out. I'm going to try and find a thicker set of mag nuts first.

Looks like the rim is running out some?? I'd remove the tire and have the tireman run the rim on the balancer by itself. If the camera in the video had been held more steady I could have known for sure about the rim. I just placed my mouse pointer on the edge of the rim while the video ran. But since the camera was moving a little it was hard to get a good reading.
The tire definitely has run out, but it could also be the axle???

God that sucks. Tell me a cell phone wasn't involved.

I know there had to be with just the way it happened. Traffic starts moving and he hit the gas to get going. Then went back to texting or facebooking or whatever it was and not pay attention to the traffic, which just started moving and stopped.

He had Progressive insurance luckily.

I'm thinking that's what I'm going to have to do is get the wheel itself checked with the tire off. I can't imagine that the axle has runout but it's possible. They are new Moser and only have a few hundred miles on them. My engine isn't powerful enough to bend or twist them so it would have been a factory flaw if there is one, at least in my mind it would be.

It will probably be a fight with Progressive..... Pick a good shop to fix the Dart, one that knows how to deal with insurance companies. Most body shops that work on old stuff don't have much experience dealing with insurance companies. I have been a catastrophic insurance adjuster (auto) for 12 years....

Still waiting for the ok from the big boss at progressive but they have it totalled up at $6400 at the moment. What I'd have to pay to cover the remaining part for a full repaint is still a lot. My wife isn't going for it and I'm not going to get a paint job done that paints half the car to match the current paint. It's just not nice enough. So I'm in a pickle where I either take the money and do what I can to straighten the trunk and leave the cracked and chipped paint and bent up parts or I shell out a bunch of money for a new paint job that will put me in the dog house forever. I remember when life was so simple before this car. Sure wish I could go back to that sometimes.

Don't cash there check if you do you have nothing no recourse. Talk to a lawyer to be made whole. Don't let them off the hook.

I think I`d look in to a trick 2 tone paint job. there are a million paint schemes out there. your car can handle it well.----jmo

Everything is being paid directly to the body shop if I get it done there. No plans on taking a check directly from insurance yet.

I had thought about it a few years ago but never saw one I liked so I scrapped the idea if I ever repainted.

How she sits currently in the body shop while I await and see if they can do me a better deal or if it will end up half painted.

this ain`t gonna help, but I got the fish out today to do some refining on the fuel inj. tune. less than 2 miles from my house, a dumbass in a ford p/u waits till I get to him to pull out in front of me . had to hit the brakes to keep from hitting him. first thing I`m thinkin, revenge! looked like he was even laughing about it to his wife or who ever. good thing we weren`t going the same way, I might not have been able to stand it. I wonder about people sometimes just thinkin they`d like to mess some ones stuff up. bastages !! hope u getter done right .

Glad you didn't get into a fender bender Bob! The retards are on the streets everywhere and they're tough to avoid.

But a side note, I hit the shop with a low number on doing the front end. I asked to take the hood out of the equation and just do the fenders, cowl, 1/2 the doors (since they were already doing half for the repair work), and roof. The scoop could be bonded to the metal hood, but eventually it will crack. So I didn't see a point in putting the money and work into it. What I'll do is sand the hood and scoop down and spray it all with JD Blitz Black, same as on my dash and grill. At least that way the hood and scoop will have the same finish. I don't care for the bolt on scoop look but it will have to do until I can get a pin-on fiberglass hood later down the road. But anyhow, I shot them with a low number and they accepted it! So at least several things will get fixed now that always bothered me. Some things I'll change on it are a shaved gap cap, de-badging, and going with a little bit different tail stripe. I need to start looking around for someone who does custom designs. All I'm really looking for is a factory-like tail stripe with the scat pack bee within a circle. Was thinking there was a vendor here that did them?

Challenger Gary does strip kits and Phoenix graphics. If you have car wrap place around you they should be able to do a custom one for you.

Sounds like things are going to work out. With the paint work being done they were going to have to prep the roof and doors any way to blend so the only other prep work in on the fenders and cowl. Some additional paint and clear and you are good......

You're exactly right. There wasn't that much more to do with the hood being out of the equation. So they're shaving the gas cap, antenna, and all the badging holes and painting the rest of the car for $1500 out of pocket. If the paint comes out anything like the cars I've seen come out of there, I got a hell of a deal. These guys do really nice work.
