are you looking for a core? Or are you looking for a rebuilt one? are you looking for a race unit?

I have a SB 727 rebuilt but never put in. Only problem is i live North of Philly. Its been sitting in my garage for a few years and need to get rid of it. Open to any reasonable offer. Lou

Redo the 904. 904 is faster than a 727. less parasitic loss.
Yeah, I have been told that, but the trans shop owner was skeptical. He is going to do his research and get back to Me. Ideally, keeping the 904 would save me a lot of other things I would need to change. The car and tranny are 1965 273 v-8 904, cable shift on the column set up, swapping in the 340. I would like the trans to handle up to 375-400 h.p. considering future upgrades of course.
I should also say that I am looking for a 742 or 489 sure grip 3rd member. not so sure the 741 will be adequate.

get
Tom hands new, Chrysler torqueflite a-904 and a-727 transmission how to rebuild, book you can get it at Amazon he's online here I bought mine from him personally and had him autograph It.

lots of guys on here running stroker motors with 500 horsepower are using the 904 s.
sounds like your transmission guy is not a torqueflite man. how much is he going to charge you to do this?

Personally I like the 742 the best because the inner pinion bearing is the largest. but personally I have never had a 741 break on me. They put them behind 383 also.

Trans shop rebuilds mostly rebuilds the modern stuff. They were more of a speed shop 20-30 year ago. He did say He would buy any 727 cores He can get His hands on! He knows there is a market for them. I just might try and locate a few and barter a 904 rebuild!

John is in the northwest corner of Indiana.
I have sold him several 727 and 904 Cores. I've also traded him cores for parts.

I have one of Johns 727 Manual reverse pattern transmissions with a Frank Lupo 4200 stall convertors in my 68 Barracuda 416. Works great.

Do you plan on retaining the cable shift? If so you will need a 65 vintage transmission. Your cable wont work with later ones.

I agree with keeping the 904.

I bought all the parts for my 904 from John and then me and a friend mine built the tranny to John's specs. I used the Greiner low band apply valve body.

It has an 8-inch turbo action converter the B&M neutral balance flexplate.

This is going behind a 360 NHRA Stocker motor.

If you want to drive to Kenosha,Wi I have a 727 with 2500 convertor . I would go thru it but did do duty in a drag years ago. Has deeper pan and told internal upgrades but make no promises as to what as this was in a car I should never have bought and has turned into the SECOND dumbest thing I have ever done. $150 and take it away. I also have 2 904' with convertors that worked fine when removed. Not to kill a possible sale but with almost same work to a 904 as a 727 you will not hurt it with 4 to 500 hundred hp unless you just plain abuse the crap out of it. Good Luck with the project

At this time, considering all the replies I have gotten, I am leaning towards keeping the 904 and rebuilding it. Retaining the cable shift was NOT a priority, but now If I stay with the current 904 set-up, I save myself time and money if I do not have to make the conversion to linkage.

Interested. I should know early this upcoming week which way I go. I would be interested in your items no matter what. By the way, do you have any idea if the 2500 stall converter will fit the 904-340 combo I am considering?

The 904 is plenty adequate for your engine. I run one behind a 408 making over 500 ft lbs of torque and about the same HP and a 4k stall. Took very little to make it tough enough to stand up to my 408. I've been building torqueflites since 81 when we were dumb asses and threw away 904's cause we thought they were junk and swapped in 727's then had to do more work to make the car as fast as it was with the 904. Now I wish I had every one of those 904's back. Same goes for the 741 pumpkin. Their a lot stronger than given credit for

I forgot to ask what year your 727 is? Is it cable or linkage shift?

Just in case it wasn't mentioned (I may have missed it).....If the original 904 is kept, you'll have to get a converter snout adapter because the older snouts are smaller than the the back of newer cranks ('67+). You'll also be limited to the converters you can use because the splines are different in the trans, unless you modify the existing one after solving the snout issue.
