The oil rings and expanders feeling snug in the groove is normal. I can't remember: Did you check ring side clearance in the grooves? It all ought to be fine with new parts..... I just make sure. And you put the rings down in the holes and checked rings gaps? (I figure you did all that as you are thorough, but just can't recall for sure.)

Yes for side clearance on top and 2nd rings. Measured amounts varied from 0.001"-0.0035". FSM spec is 0.0015-0.0030", Not sure what Mahle spec is(Ill double check), for now I figger good on top 2.
I cant find measurements on expander and rails. Next one I will look closer to see that expander and rails are in the grooves properly.
I will look into specs. At least with one piston in I can get closer to compression ratio.
I measured as best I could with dial indicator, and then again with "straight" edge and verniers. Both times I come up with 0.034" outta the hole.
So early compression figures are ranging 9.9:1 to 10.1:1. Head gasket bore diameter and compressed thickness will play a role.

Yes to end gaps for top 2(both within spec). I will look into specs for expander and rails

Thanks Lelo!The 340 from machinist was a good deal and fit for me, so I don't wanna mess it up lol. Trying to avoid costly mistakes.

Ok so top 2 ring side clearance measured 0.003"-0.0035" for top ring. 2nd ring measured 0.0015"-0.0025"

Bottom rails are harder to measure as they should be installed to measure?
Suggestions how to measure?
I get 0.003" but it requires some effort. These don't slop in the grooves like the top 2 rings do.

Ok so slow going but trying to do some house renos. Finally pistons are in. Going to dbl chk rod side clearances just to be safe.
I was over at a buddies place doing brakes on loris car and he is going to let me use his garage for the motor swap. I told him hopefully a weekend or week at most. He laughed and said "more like a month, I'll betcha $10"
Lol I took the bet obviously. I just rented his nice clean shop for $10. Lol

Thanks Wayne. Not much to post, but I did get rods torqued(45 lb/ft) and rod side to side (.016-.017) spec is .006-.014 so .003 out. Not sure if crucial or not? Not a race motor, but I will have urges I can't resist lol.
Next on list is oil pump. I have a stock one from 318 but looking for suggestions? Yes a HP shaft for sure. Recommendations?
X heads will be disassembled and get a dot port job.

Unless you are expecting low oil pressure, I wouldn't. That's just my personal opinion though.
318 built- 80+psi cold and 60 warmed up at idle
5.9 Magnum (mild) 70+cold and 40 warm with the same M72 oil pump.
 
So getting to the point of choosing head gaskets to digger out what compression I will be at. I have a couple sets. One set is new and unknown make (4.140" bore and .0345" thick) see pics
I also have a used set of cosetic. 4.070" bore.
Not sure if either of these will work. Bore on block is .030 over so 4.070"
Any ideas on mfg of new set in pic? It's got a black somewhat tacky coating. No markings anywhere.

So dbl checked my piston height to be sure. I get .034" outta the hole. So with the new head gasket I mentioned above being 0.0345" thick, does that essentially put me at zero deck? Piston to valve problems ?
Here' values I used on UEM pistons site for calculations.
Cyl bore 4.07"
Stroke 3.31"
Rod length 6.123
Head gasket thk .034"
Head gasket bore dia (I ball parked at 4.100"??) Suggestions?
Cyl head volume 70cc
Valve relief 8cc
Piston sits .034" outta the hole.
I get 10.04 Compression and 7.20 Dynamic.
Seem about right? I think I'm maxed as far as I wanna go with compression with today' gas.
Anyone see issues with piston to valve?
Also head gasket suggestions? Or help id'ing the new black ones?

No zero deck is top of piston flush with the deck. Looks like you have a small dome on your pistons for open chamber heads? Don't know a lot about 340s. IMO and I know a few that would hit the red X button, best case scenario is .035 - .050 clearance in quench area and use head gasket thickness to get that.
 
Thanks Lelo, I have a quench calculation question.
I measured the combustion chamber height from head surface to flat area in combustion chamber. See pic, is that one of the ways to measure? I came up with 0.080".
I have.0.034" of piston above deck at tdc.
I use a 0.038" thick compressed head gasket. I now plug these values into formula. 0.080-(0.038"-0.034")
Which gives me 0.080-0.004" Giving me theoretically 0.076" of quench? Seems like a lot or did I mess it up?

The chamber looks pretty rough, have you measured the others to see if you get the same number? Also piston height on the other ends? Have had deck heights differ. I want to help but I have no experience using dome pistons with a open chamber and don't want to lead you astray.
