sleepers....how fast and how plain before it is one?

-
what about fords?
you'd never expect one of them to be fast

in fact, i went to a car show today
it ran from 4 to 7

around 5.30 all these mudstanks start pouring in...i guess they went as fast as they could

i thought my 64 valiant was a bit of a sleeper.. ran mid 12's as it is in th epics. that was pretty respectable back then for a street cat.. surprised quite a few guys on the street..

There's a sleeper. You wouldn't expect that from that Valiant.

but it wouldnt out run much of anything today. back when...sure i would agree fully. but in todays world of fast cars out the factory gates. it is much to difficult to spot a fast car vs a monster fast car. even with wheels and a cage it is hard pressed to know for certain. if you are dealing with a car like abodyjoes or one like mine with big twin turbos and 1000+hp street killer

How about a stock 2006 Rav-4. It was the fastest production Toyota made that year. 270 horsepower.

Being the fastest Toyota is kinda like winning the special Olympics
Now that reminds of a joke that a Harley owner told me many years ago. He said that he hated Japanese motor cycles, I told him that I had heard that they ride real smooth compared to American bikes. Then he said that riding a Japanese bike was like making love to another guy (of course he used much more graphic language), he said, it might feel good but you wouldn't want anyone to see you!!!

I've heard that about mopeds and fat chicks

New cars don't count. There are a lot of sleepers out there. SRT8 Jeeps are an example.
Sleeper is a old term probably came about in the 60's A 4 door 64 Polara with a dual quad 426 Wedge would be a sleeper.

to me, a sleeper is something that runs a lot faster than one would ever expect. So, if it looks like a ..... examples:
  1. 100% bone stock 340 Duster, wheels, tires, exhaust manifolds, etc., and it clicks off a 12.10 at 110 mph, that's a sleeper.
  2. Or a typical cast head small block at a local car show, ya know, headers, sun pro tach, full interior, traction bars with a 60 series tire, looks like a 13 second car but it goes high 10's, that's a sleeper.
  3. Your car, without the chute, but having a cage, I'd guess a typical 408 stroker running at least low 11's.... so yes, if you click off a 7 second 1/4 mile pass, then that's a sleeper. And those that say "you are not fooling anyone" are not being honest, because without the chute, nobody would guess 7's by watching it drive by. Even if they guessed 10's by look'n at ya at a stop light, they missed it by 3 seconds, so you'd be raising their eyebrows as well :D

While not fast by any stretch of the imagination. I bolted a GM Performance Supercharger onto my daily driver 2004 Pontiac Vibe (Was essentially a Corolla/Matrix). Only ran 8 lbs of boost (w/Piggy Back ECU, CAI and Pulley) but was enough to take it from a measly 109 whp to just under a measly 160 whp. Base ran 17.91 and the best with the blower was 15.80 with limited/no traction off the line. Slow by anyone's standards for sure, but it did surprise some "faster" cars on occasion from a roll. With the stock exhaust it was very quiet until I floored it and the blower whine sounded like a bunch of pissed off bees LOL. Certainly made my 45 min-1 hr each way commute to work much more enjoyable.

So I guess it could maybe be called a sleeper. Especially with the two car seats in the back!

thank you sir. if i had a different brand many would be suspect for sure. however owning a dart nobody even the rare wise guys would guess a single digits street car from a mopar. add to it the ugly looking color patina, dosile idle i figured it wasnt a snoring boring sleeper but it was more of a"holy s$%# didnt see that coming" kind of sleeper.

it is only on 275/60x15s with an 8in wheel and leaf springs. not a huge wheel under the car. bjt it is a muscle car so it is gonna have that 80s look to it.
Black or body colored steelies, poverty caps, and a rear rim offset that makes it look not so deep dished will help A LOT to hide it. Sorry brother that aint a sleeper the way it sits. Its a patina'd hot rod. Sticks out like a sore thumb.

Sleepers look like this, they will put a hurting on your day, if you want to play.

Here is an eddy performer RPM with an eddy 750 that will go on the 360 for my 67 cuda notch that will be a 408 stroker. I ground off the edelbrock markings on the intake, used a commando type low restriction air cleaner with a spectre element in it, will put stock mopar filter instructions decals on it.

Plan to port match it up to a nice set of aluminum heads and paint em up. Also plan on using stock valve covers too, and the whole engine will be painted up 67 plymouth commando red. Only thing that will appear not stock is the hedman block huggers i will be using. With a stroker i can run a little less compression and slightly less hairy cam to keep the chop out of the idle and still get the HP and torque. This keeps it on the lowdown.

A sleeper is the whole package, engine needs to look the part too. I can lie if asked about the headers and say i did an engine swap from a slanty to a 273 or 318 and couldent find exhaust manifolds, so i used these block huggers.

Reminds of the time my step-brat (girl) beat my '72 Plymouth Satellite Sebring Plus project car (318/auto) with her 2004 Toyota 4runner four-wheel drive SUV (4.0 V-6 auto) by two full seconds.

i kind of consider my dart to be a sleeper. yes you can see the cage at some angles. yes it has a chute(but it is removable with ease to conceal it).
so what would you guys consider a true sleeper of sorts? 10 sec, 9s, 8s?? how fast and how simple looking does it have to be?? i think just decieving the masses it is a sleeper.
please discuss and share a sleeper you believe to be one and how fast it is or is gonna be.

mine below for starters high 7s once its worked out. 8s probably in the first couple of hits. yet i onoy intend to run the 1/8 so mid 5s to start mid 4s is the goal.

Without the shoot and swap out the wheels with some steelies. Sleeper for sure.
