Bactine advertised it was a non-sting first-aid spray. I have not used it since the 1960's, but in my memory it did sting a little. As a kid, I believed that stuff was a real panacea.

Beat the heck out of Merthiolate (Mom's favorite) or Mercurochrome! (but yeah, it stung a little)

It did sting slightly but it was such a small amount we let it slide.

I found the liquid in the squirt bottle was painless but the aerosol spray can stung like a Mother F@&$er.

Mercurochrome stung like holy hell when I was a kid....I hated it. I would go out of my way to NOT tell my Mom when I got hurt to avoid the mercurochrome "acid"!!!:soapbox:

Mercury in our medicine, lead in our gas, cyclamates in our Kool Aid, and asbestos everywhere. The younger folks wonder how we've survived this long.

It built character, something the younger folks know very little about.

Yep.
Thats why none of us are allergic to peanuts, bees, gluten etc. as well as other social mental diagnoses.

I'm old enough to remember iodine, mercurochrome, hydrogen peroxide, who knows what else!!!

Between Mercurochrome and Merthiolate, Mercurochrome was the one that stung the least to us. And then when we were sick, we got Paregaric. lol

I remember that old red iodine, my daddy used to put diesel fuel on our wound's too, seems like it did help with the soreness best I can remember.:)

I use to like watching the bubble and fizz but then my school taught square dancing for P.E sometimes so maybe I'm just a hick red neck?

It was the iodide red **** that I didn't like.

Mercurochrome and Merthiolate and iodine. Back when boys and girls were, well Boys and Girls. Now society wants to call then "theybies"

Don't forget the lead in paint.
Kids used to eat the paint chips in window sills when i was a kid.
We used to wash car parts and our hands in leaded gasoline.
After you were finished, your hands would be white with the lead left on them, and if you had any cuts on your hands, that would really freakin' hurt as well!
Iodine was some nasty ****.
I avoided it at all costs..............

My Dad used to tell us to let the dog lick the wound because they have such high antibacterial saliva.
That sort of struck us as odd because dogs lick their asses.:D
His reply was "Have you ever seen a dog with in infected ***?"

In spite of the kidding around he was right.

Hey maybe that's why I have such a twisted sense of humor.

Yes, I was also told that as a kid! I guess that was the word all over back then.:)

I still have a bottle of merthiolate in my medecine cabinet. I used to have 2 of them, but my wife found one of them and threw it away because it was "past it's expiration date". Well, no kidding!!! But I still use the one I have. Greatest stuff in the world to clear up an infected toenail:thumbsup:

Word for the wise: never put witch hazel on an open wound! That stuff will bring tears to your eyes!!!
