Bactine advertised it was a non-sting first-aid spray. I have not used it since the 1960's, but in my memory it did sting a little. As a kid, I believed that stuff was a real panacea.

It built character, something the younger folks know very little about.Mercury in our medicine, lead in our gas, cyclamates in our Kool Aid, and asbestos everywhere. The younger folks wonder how we've survived this long.

Merthiolate.....damn.....I'd forgotten about that !Beat the heck out of Merthiolate (Mom's favorite) or Mercurochrome! (but yeah, it stung a little)
I'm old enough to remember iodine, mercurochrome, hydrogen peroxide, who knows what else!!!

I remember that old red iodine, my daddy used to put diesel fuel on our wound's too, seems like it did help with the soreness best I can remember.
Yes, I was also told that as a kid! I guess that was the word all over back then.My Dad used to tell us to let the dog lick the wound because they have such high antibacterial saliva.
That sort of struck us as odd because dogs lick their asses.
His reply was "Have you ever seen a dog with in infected ***?"
In spite of the kidding around he was right.
Hey maybe that's why I have such a twisted sense of humor.
