Found an ad for a 318 and 727 trans on FB Marketplace not far from me, guy said it came out of a 1970’s Dodge truck, looked like a Warlock to me...said it ran good and shifted nice, claims it has 75k miles. I figured for $300 it seemed like a good deal especially since it had almost every engine accessory on it. I figured that it might make a good engine for the wife’s Valiant once I freshen it up and put a 4-speed behind it...but then I noticed the heads...there is a “J” between the plugs...score! I can’t read the numbers on the block to see if it’s a 340 cause the motor mounts and exhaust manfolds are in the way and I can’t get it out of the truck till Saturday when I have a little time to find a place to put it. Definitely not a 360, but I would love to find out its a 340!! How ever it could be a 318 with “J” heads installed...either way I think I got a good deal :)

BTW, I asked the kid why he pulled it and he said he’s swapping in an LS Chev and 6-speed...not my cup of tea but they are cheap...I just can’t go down that road so I’m glad to score this from him.

Sweet! With the head swap, you know it's been messed. Might be some goodies! Good luck with it!

Good find, that electric choke Edelbrock is worth 1/2 of what you paid for it. Plus the rest of the package and all the goodies.

4 bbl intake, front engine pulleys and parts, 727 trans, 318 engine.

You did alright . . .

Oh, and I also got his big chain, he hooked it to the bolt behind the starter and struggled to get the bolt back out and said to just keep the chain lol (the bolt was almost out and the bolt must have been binding, he could hardly get a wrench on it and this was after it was in the truck. It also puked lots of antifreeze out in the truck bed but no big deal, should have seen his garage floor where most of it ended up! Real nice young man though, he had a sweet new Jeep but not sure if he was a true “MoPar” guy

There are two types of J heads, 915 castings for 340s & 360s & the same as O, U or Z heads.

Newer J heads are 974 casings for 318s.

So, pull the valve covers to see what numbers the casting numbers end in if you want to know for sure.

Did they stamp the driver's side front of the block under the head in the 70s. Looks clear enough to do some scraping and see what it is

You just saved another engine from the scrap pile. Keep in touch because chances are that “LS swap” will not transpire and he will be selling the truck as well.
Great job!

Hopefully the truck winds up in better hands, too. It would be cheaper to build a balls to the wall 318 than to swap to an LS, plus a whole lot less aggravating.

The engine wiring harness would have been good too except he cut it right at the back of the motor...should have just unplugged it and it could have been used for someone else. :( He’s also ditching the rear ended for a Ford 8.8....I bet a lot gets wrecked...the truck wasn’t mint but cool, still had the wide 15x8 factory chrome slot wheels....

I would bet from the exhaust manifolds that's a 360.... 318 manifolds weren't that beefy... Unless they put different ones on truck motors...

Plus the kick down linkage is not from 1970, it looks like from mid 70's like 74 give or take...

I also think they got the valve covers on backwards, usually the pcv is on the passenger side... :BangHead:

Either way, it's a good score... Way to go Keith...

The passenger side exhaust manifold is the same as what I have on my 75 318 from the 75 dart.

The driver side would be different between a truck and a car.

I think he has a later 70s 318.

Good score Mr. Keith!!!

I noticed that about the valve covers as well, strange thing is is there are no wire loom brackets on them either. The harmonic balancer looks like a internal balance one...and yes kick down is later mid 70’s...and the exhaust manifolds look beefy but they are truck ones so not sure, there was a part number on them just didn’t think to look them up yet.

Alternator looks brand new :D

When I get time I’ll get it out of the truck and get a positive ID on things, I’m curious. If it is just a 318 I’m still plenty happy!

Fun trying to guess what engine that is. I am leaning towards 360 myself. The exhaust manifolds, the cast iron 4 bbl intake came on the 360 Trucks, 360 with a 727 behind it . . Yes. Even looks like a 360 balancer on the front, the ones with the cutouts to remove weight for the external balance 360 cranks. So then that 727 will have the weighted torque converter too, to go with the 360 external balance crank. Nice matched up engine and trans.

Will have to see what Keith finds when he reads the block.

Yes, my 340 has that but I didn’t check there either, plenty of gunk so a scrapper would be needed.

Intake is Edelbrock aftermarket aluminum....
