my Low dollar 318 hop-up project

Done with my first set of heads! THANKS ALOT! Halfway through the first one I figured a lot of it out! Halfway through the second one, I was wishing that I had another set to do! I went from intimidated to bring it on! Thanks alot! I can't get the volume to work on the valve lapping tutorial to finish up! This is something that I'll refer to as long as I own a car. I might port the old ladies civic next week! LOL!!

Yes, I was intrigued for years and years with porting heads.

Poor pics but a good job I'm hoping!

I will say that I could use a longer but to reach in farther but I used what was available locally

Thanks , got volume on porting now. So your saying smooth out the bowl area more? The exhaust ports are blended far better than pics show, I also used sandpaper rolls on them to smooth and polish. The intake ports I 1 was afraid to get to smooth, I didn't want the fuel mixture to must and stick to the head 2 The but a I have don't let me reach in quite far enough to do much better. If your saying to though I'll get a longer one to work on intake. Ports also thanks

If you look at the picture of the video, you'll see what the ports look like on those 318 heads. Of course, your pictures may be deceiving, but it looks like your bowl area under the seats to the valve guide could be smoothly blended a little more... but your certainly on the right path!

That is awesome, and inspiring. Thanks!!

* Just for the record, the dual quad set up brought the total cost up to 778.00. I subtracted the cost of the carb and intake and added the cost of the dual quad set up. So, as it sits in the car today, it's at 778.00.

Are you going to run the dual quad at the drag strip this year (if it is open) to see the difference between the dq and 4bbl? I'm interested to see that.

Yes, it will happen eventually, but the Drag Truck will be priority once the 5.9 is in.

Yea I don't blame you I just watched some videos of a guy with a 80s dodge truck running 12s with a small block not sure about his combo I will see if i can find it again.

Was it red? "The Gas Tap" ?? He has a red short bed with a 5.9 that ran 12.7's, 3.55's, 2800 stall, street driver.

Yep that is the same truck I just found the video of him describing his build stock 5.9 short block Hughes cam and 318 magnum heads. That he ported himself. That is extremely impressive now that I know that! The bar just got set my friend. Lol

Our engines are pretty close in the build, but his cam has more duration and a little more lift.

Hi 318willrun,

First off great thread! It has been the most informative thread on the topic of a 318 budget build.
I have two complete running 318's to choose the best parts from and will be following the steps that you posted

*building a 1988 d100 truck with a some get up and go for the street *
Have - 904 transmission / stock converter / Holey 600 / 340 cast intake

If you find these questions and have the time to answer it would be greatly appreciated!
Could you make a recommendation on the following,

Questions

best cam choice?
KB flat-top pistons worth it or just keep them stock?

Thanks in advance

Thanks and welcome to the site! Certainly the pistons are a great choice. Remember, I couldn't because I limited myself to an "under 500.00" limit. As for the cam, many good choices. Not sure what your gear ratio is, but in a truck you might want something with a 112 LSA, around 212* duration @050. Worst thing is to over cam an engine and have it be lazy from off-idle to 4000 rpm's. I like my cam in my 318, even with stock converter and 2.76's. However, my car weighs 3160 without driver.

Thanks so much for the quick response! Yes your build was $500 (killer work)..... I will be trying to keep it close to that $$ within reason.
I will hit the books with your advice in mind.
This forum is really great!

Might as well post the story behind the Duster the low dollar 318 resides in.... now 778 dollar 318 with dual quads. If ya watch till the end, a little rubber burnin' (someplace in Iowa :) )

318willrun,
I looked at your youtube channel and watched the video where you speak about the dual quad 273 intake on the duster. Question again..... would a 340 intake make a whole lot of difference over a 4bbl 273 intake?
Thanks,
GLB

340/360 intakes work great on 318's. Don't let the larger ports become a deal (nor let somebody put it in your ear that it won't work properly). I've done it more times than I care to remember... lol. I'd stay away from using a 273 4bbl intake that needed modified to fit a 318. I only did it because of the dual quad set up.

Good to know,
Thanks again for the quick response!!
You probably have not heard the last from me yet. Haha
Cheers,
