What is a good way to clean the raw metal (not aluminum) alternator housing without hurting the internals?

Looks very good.A very fine 4" wire wheel on a drill works to help remove corrosion and polish it up. WD-40 and a terry cloth towel by hand at the end has a nice polishing effect to it too.
Repainted the center steel strip black with a small paint brush, after cleaning it up with a small stainless steel wire brush and final clean with brake parts cleaner to remove any oil before painting.

This one was done a year ago, this is how it looks today.
The red and green ones at the bottom last about two minutes. Crap flying all over.Looks very good.
Ive been using the Dremmel with little brass wire wheels on oxidixed parts, but them damn things break apart if you run them hard. Wear eye protection!
