Small Block X-Head Gurus in NC ...

I'm in Greensboro NC. Any recommendations in NC or Southwest VA that would work on cast iron X heads for 68 Darts GTS 340 and maybe help me design the valvetrain for the car? I contacted Larry Smith in NC but he is unable to work on Iron Heads.

That last picture is the ugliest Mopar I ever seen! LOL..
He can't work on them or doesn't want to? Grinding on cast iron is much more of a pain than grinding on aluminum as you can only imagine..
 
my own brother worked in machine room at arringtons and wont touch iron heads for me! lol only aluminum!! machine shops round here hard to get them to work on mopar stuff, so much circle track chevy stuff! then if thay ant building the whole deal for a price tag still dont wanta fool with it!! crank work is impossible to find now days too! you find a good mopar machinist round here let me know, im 30 minutes north of P.T.I.!
 
I'd settle for new seats and a performance valve job(with advice on valves and spring kit to use and ill smooth up the ports myself if needed)...

Physically unable to due to the weight.
 
There’s worthwhile cast iron, W2’s and Chevy Dart Platinum, and then there’s stock small block Mopar heads. Not saying they can’t be made to work but it’s not enjoyable work. Heck even a 906 big block Mopar head can push the 290-300 cfm area.
 
try contacting Herb McCandless' shop and ask for a referral.

They are date coded to the car so I'm more interested in optimizing them for a decent cam through the production exhaust manifolds , ported heads with a match ported intake etc... no going for all out power

I’d say he doesn’t want to. Ive been following his faceplant page for a few years and have yet to see any porting updates that included iron heads. All aluminum, all the time.
 
I wouldn't be so fussy about 'local'. You can ship them anywhere in the US pretty easily.

Hey they will work fine for what you want to do. Heck I ran 11.82 with a set over 40 years ago and lots of guys have gone a lot faster than that. That damn cast iron leaves a bad taste in your mouth when you are grinding on it.

I've done 11.4 with 596 cast heads (smog heads), but I have the slowest stroker on the internet...

IMO the most important thing to do is cc them. Pistons are above deck but the cc for them can be figured out as well.
That and knowing the flow numbers will let you pick a cam.
There's various published flow numbers for X-heads (stan weiss has a big collection, there's also some here on FABO). So if you can't get them floewed you still can have an idea. As 66f posted a good valve job will go a long way.
Any matching between the intake and heads should focus on possible offset of the side walls. There seems to be alot of variationin port to manifold bolt holes from head to head. I don't see an issue if the intake side is a little smaller. Arguably some advantage in keeping velocity up and anti-reversion. I do see a problem when the air flow along a side wall or roof of the intake has to make a step to get into the head. Exhaust side can have the same alignment issues.
 
If you wear an N95 mask while porting, you will still taste cast iron in your mouth, but you won't risk transmitting the corona virus to others around you, even if they are people who might as well get sick and die. It's a tough call.
 
If you still have the factory cam for that engine, it would be ineresting to see what it measures at .004 etc. Doubly so if its a 4 speed cam.

You probably don't need much with X heads. Mill them to get them flat, Performance valve job, clean up the bowls, some stainless steel valves, and springs to match your cam.
That's all I'm looking for ... lightest valvetrain possible matched to cam ... they pretty experienced with Mopars? I seem to remember hearing their name at Piedmont Dragway every now and then
